Catawba County and Newton-Conover City Schools will both be operating on a three-hour delay on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014.

Both schools issued statements Thursday afternoon regarding the delays in normal schedule.

100 percent of child sex offense cases prosecuted

CONOVER — Twenty-seven sex offenders who preyed upon local children were successfully prosecuted in 2013, thanks to the work of the Children’s Advocacy and Protection Center of Catawba County, local law enforcement and the District Attorney’s Office.

Anonymous tip leads to Newton drug arrest

A Newton man was arrested on Thursday after authorities found him in possession of drugs.

After an anonymous tip was provided to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, a probation officer and narcotics investigators searched the property of 33-year-old George Andrew Singer, of 2669 Claremont Road.

Phone scam targeting Maiden residents

The Maiden Police Department is on the lookout for phone scammers targeting its town’s citizens.

Electric and Utility customers in Maiden have been receiving phone calls from toll free “1-800” numbers pretending to be a representative from the town.

BREAKING NEWS: Schools closed again Thursday

Catawba County and Newton-Conover City Schools will both be closed for the second-straight day on Thursday.

N-CCS Superintendent Dr. David Stegall send out an email around 3 p.m. on Wednesday notifying local media of the system's decision.

Catawba County Schools announced on their website around the same time that they are also closed on Thursday.

Conover Police help in catching Michigan man

The Conover Police Department assisted in taking down an out-of-state criminal this past weekend.

The Albion Department for Public Safety obtained a warrant for 47-year-old Jackie Dale McConnell, of Albion, Mich. for his arrest from the Calhoun County Prosecutor for Sex Offender Registry Violations.
