Off the chain: Tompkins carves creations

Brad Tompkins may be the best kept secret in Catawba County.

Tompkins works for the city of Newton as tree trimmer. His job is not what makes him special, though. It’s want he creates outside of work that does.

After Tompkins trims trees down, he turns them into works of art. Tompkins uses his chainsaw to sculpt animals such as bears, eagles and frogs.

Tournament, ‘Champions course’ returns in October

After receiving rave reviews from all constituents, the “Champions Course” at Rock Barn Golf & Spa will return for the 2014 Greater Hickory Kia Classic at Rock Barn, which is set for Oct. 13-19 in Conover.

Local poet Owens is featured on radio show

Hickory poet Scott Owens was featured on Garrison Keillor’s National Public Radio show, “The Writer’s Almanac” on Thursday.

Owens’ poem, “Cleaning House,” from his new collection “Eye of the Beholder” was read aloud by Keillor on this daily nationally syndicated radio and online show. Readers can still hear the poem at writersalmanac.publicradio.org.
