June 18th
Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention of Catawba County (A.S.A.P.) coalition member Walt Thomas recently donated $1,060 for the purchase of a “Fatal Vision Starter Kit” for A.S.A.P.
Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry, a United Way partner agency, is proud to announce the addition of six summer interns to its staff.
The interns are Becca Bleich, Kari Gibson, Kayla Gibson, Aaron Little, Adam Matthews and Michelle Payne.
Richard Patrick Connor Jr., 36, of 2342 Edna St. in Catawba was arrested on Friday, June 14 and charged with felony conspiracy to commit murder.
He was arrested in the Stony Point community of Alexander County Friday around 11:30 a.m. by the Alexander County Sheriff Office.
Lots of people are beating the heat this summer and taking a dip in the pool at the Newton Recreation Center on South Brady Avenue.
June 17th
Newton along with the Hickory and Conover police departments and N.C. Highway Patrol wrote a combined 59 tickets and made several arrests during a weekend checkpoint.
The group of 17 officers conducted the checkpoint Saturday, June 15 at 11 p.m. that lasted until 2 a.m Sunday. The checkpoint was located on U.S. 70 near the Hickory American Legion Fair Grounds.

Father’s Day was founded in Spokane, Wa. at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there.
Catawba County Sheriff’s Office arrested Alyshia Rachell Wilson, 28, of 2683 JB Rd. in Claremont for one count Felony Murder and Non-negligent Manslaughter and one count Felony Conspire to Murder.

A fast moving powerful storm struck Conover Thursday afternoon and left a trail of damage across the city.
“As of noon today [Friday] we have collected more than 50 tons of debris since clean up efforts began yesterday,” Conover City Manager Donald Duncan said.
June 13th
Two Hickory men were convicted of unrelated child sex cases in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court this week.
One incident occurred in Newton and the other was in the county.
The first case involved David Allen Hefner, 29, of Hickory, who was convicted of three counts Felony Indecent Liberties with a Child.
The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will hold three public hearings during the regularly scheduled Board meeting on Monday, June 17, at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Ave. in Newton.
