Catawba County was ranked 20th in the state for crash fatalities and 10th in the state for DWI fatalities this past year.
“We have a part to play in this,” Conover Police Captain Eric Loftin told the Observer News Enterprise this week. “We are in the middle of the county.
After working for other veterinary offices in Lincoln County, Donald Whitener decided to open his own practice. Conover Veterinary Hospital opened in 1988 with Whitener and one assistant receptionist.
Twenty five years later Whitener employs 14 full- and part-time employees and has gone through three renovations to grow his business.
A late morning family argument led to two attempted murder arrests Wednesday afternoon by the Catawba County Sheriff's Office.
Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said Sherry Rohney, of 6570 Old Shelby Road, was shot by her 16 year-old son, Daniel Rohney sometime this morning. According to Reid,

Newton-Conover High School's NJROTC hosted its 18th annual field meet this past Saturday, bringing in 25 schools and 27 teams.
Each team competed in 14 events including pull-up competitions and sandbag races.

Laban Helderman had what he calls a mid-life crisis 10 years ago.
That crisis involved him leaving Duke Energy after 29 years and opening Buffalo Shoals IGA Supermarket and Hardware.
“As a boy I always wanted a hardware store,” Helderman said.
Judy Hoke Sherrill, a long-term official in the justice system in this county, has announced her intention to seek election to the office of Clerk of Superior Court for Catawba County, subject to the May 6, 2014, Republican primary.
Sherrill is a native of Catawba County and a graduate of Newton-Conover High School.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries it wasn't uncommon for towns and communities in Catawba county to slowly disappear into oblivion or meld into larger surrounding cities.
County lines were often changed, crops sometimes didn't grow causing the economy to fail, and families moved away.
“This is a big hole,” Catawba Valley Community College President Garrett Hinshaw told county commissioners Tuesday.
The sinkhole that opened up July 27 in a drive and parking area at the school's main campus on U.S. 70 is also coming with a hefty price tag, Hinshaw said.
