April 12th
Thunderstorms cleared just in time for Bandys High School to hold its annual Agriculture Day. The fact filled day began at 9 a.m. as Future Farmers of America students and Bandys teachers navigated eight elementary schools through each of the stations.
A single car accident Thursday night just before 8 p.m., severely damaged an occupied residence at 3083 Buffalo Shoals Road, Maiden.
There were no injuries reported.
Bandys Fire Department officials said the occupants of the house were sitting in the room where the Honda passenger car struck.
April 11th
The community is invited to celebrate the happy life at Godoy Art Studio on Saturday, April 13 at 4 p.m. located at 105 N College Ave. in Newton.
The show, entitled “La Dolce Vita,” features 16 local artists.
April 10th
Newton Fire Department responded to a gas leak on Wednesday morning on North Ashe Avenue in Newton.
Several roads were closed, including 21st through 26 Street and Northwest Boulevard through Main Street.
Workers and residents were evacuated from the area for about an hour while crews worked to close off the gas line and secure the area.

Burke Mortuary, located in Maiden and Newton, is known for their locally-owned service to the community, but recently the mortuary has added an extra touch to help families during their grieving period.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Investigators operating on a tip from the public discovered a meth operation at a home on Coral Drive north of Lincolnton and two Maiden residents were arrested.
Newton-Conover City Schools will have a new Superintendent starting July 1.
Dr. David Stegall was named the new Superintendent of Newton-Conover City Schools at the Board of Education meeting on Monday night.
Newton Police along with Catawba County EMS and Newton-Conover Rescue Squad responded to a call at 417 N Deal Ave. in Newton on Friday afternoon where one person was found dead and another person incapacitated. The O-N-E will have additional information once it is released by Newton P.D.

Jessalyn Johnson, a Catawba Valley Community College student enrolled in the Emergency Medical Science (Paramedic) program, was awarded the Stephanie Lynn Gabriel Memorial Scholarship established through the CVCC Foundation, Inc.
April 4th
Steven Dewayne Icard, 37, of Hildebran was arrested Wednesday, April 3 for Felony Manufacturing Methamphetamine, Felony Conspire Manufacture Methamphetamine and Felony Possession/Distribution Meth Precursor. Catawba County Sheriff’s Office was able to make the arrest after finding warrants for Icard that span back to a case in 2011.
