Nature trail gets facelift

After two years of hard work and dedication, Shuford Elementary parent Mark Pennell and the school’s Parent Teacher Organization are preparing to open the Shuford Elementary nature trail. The nature trail, located behind the elementary school, caught the attention of Mark Pennell after his daughter Saryn began going to the school.

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners awarded retired Catawba County Deputy Sheriff Lynn Baker with his badge and service weapon for his 30 years of service.

Search warrant led to two meth arrests

Two men were arrested for meth charges around 8:30 p.m. on  Friday, March 29.

Newton Police Captain Tim Hayes said officers originally visited the address, 728 E 18th Street, Newton because of information on a subject. The officers received information on a subject that was believed to be staying at the address.

Trojans help raise $1,000 for juvenile diabetes

“Old School” and “New School” collided on the basketball court, Thursday at Bandys High School not only for bragging rights, but to help raise funds and awareness.

Students and faculty at the school competed in a charity basketball game with all proceeds going towards the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Glen Oaks Golf Club continues play on the course

Glen Oaks Golf Club members were devastated when they woke and found their club house was destroyed  during an early morning fire on Sunday, Feb. 24. 

A month later, the course is still in business, but one clubhouse short. Glen Oaks General Manager Dennis Henry said the golf course plans to build back in the same location and predicts a year time frame.

Area men arrested in Lincoln County

A Lincoln County traffic stop in Denver, resulted in two arrests and the confiscation of a half kilo of cocaine, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Catawba County was among 17 North Carolina governments to earn recognition in the fifth North Carolina City & County Communicators’ (NC3C) Excellence in Communications Awards presented on March 21, as part of NC3C’s annual Spring Conference in Greensboro.

Mayor visits preschool

Maiden Mayor Bob Smyre visited Mrs. Michele’s and Mrs. Brittnie’s four year old class at Rosenwald Preschool Academy on Wednesday, to promote the importance of reading.

Smyre read a couple of books to the class and fielded questions from his audience.

Long time educator dies

Hugh Ivor Setzer Jr. devoted his lifetime to the public education of children in his native Catawba County. He opened one elementary school in Newton and closed a historic one during his lengthy career.

The distinguished educator died Thursday at age 86.
