The annual “Scout Show” will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 1 p.m. till 5 p.m. at the American Legion Fairgrounds on U.S. 70 in Newton.

Montessori Mudstacle is a huge success

Catawba County’s first-ever mud run, the Montessori Mudstacle, took in proceeds of over $26,000 to benefit Montessori at Sandy Ford according to Mary Helen Cline, director of the school. 

Committee wins an award from Governor

The Teen Christmas Committee, part of Catawba County’s Christmas Bureau, was one of 21 recipients of the Governor’s Medallion Award last week in Raleigh.

Governor Pat McCrory and First Lady Ann McCrory presented Rose Arant, Chair of the Committee, with the state’s highest award for volunteer service.

Gallagher named CFO at Frye Regional

Frye Regional Medical Center welcomes Sean Gallagher as the hospital’s new chief financial officer.

Gallagher began working at Frye in April 2013, after working most recently as interim CFO of Providence Hospitals in Columbia, SC.

Maiden man wins Doc Watson Guitar Championship

Maiden musician Michael Ballard won the MerleFest 2013 Doc Watson Guitar Championship contest on Friday, April 26.

“I think MerleFest is the best festival in the United States,” Michael Ballard told crowd at the Austin Stage – and that was before he won MerleFest’s annual Doc Watson Guitar Championship.

Accident blocks busy road

A lunchtime single vehicle accident Tuesday, on West 7th Street in Newton closed the road for an hour.

A 2003 Mazda van driven by Lesley Craig, 46, from Hickory, was traveling east on West 7th Street when she drove off the side of the road and failed to regain control for 375 feet before striking a guard rail and coming to a rest at the entrance to the Greenway Trail.

Hickory Springs Manufacturing Company, one of the nation’s largest integrated solutions companies and international supplier of components to the transportation, furniture, bedding and a growing number of diversified markets, recently broke ground for a new, 10,000-square-foot foam tech lab in Conover.

Newton resident arrested for drug trafficking

April 27, 2013

A Newton man was arrested Wednesday after he was found with 16 ounces of methamphetamine.

The total value of the methamphetamine seized is estimated at $24,000.

Special Olympics athletes invade Gurley Stadium

Guests, volunteers and athletes from across Catawba County flooded into Gurley Stadium at Newton-Conover High School to celebrate the Catawba County Special Olympics.

Events were held on the high school’s track and baseball field on Friday, April 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
