Mother charged in toddler’s death

LONG VIEW — A Catawba County woman has been arrested and charged with the death of her son earlier this month.

Twenty-one-year-old Whitney Weathers of Long View was arrested Thursday and charged with felony child abuse.

Weather’s boyfriend, William Howard Lail III was charged with murder May 3 after police found their 20-month-old son dead.

Casey awarded by Conover

On Friday evening April 5, Catawba County EMS, Conover Fire Department and Conover Police were alerted to respond to a report of a small child calling 911 reporting that her mother was not breathing. 

School creates buddy program for students

Every other Friday Shuford Elementary welcomes a large group of high school students. The students aren’t there to observe. They are there to visit friends.

The perfect present

Owen Gilleland is a nine year old that cares about his community.

The Concordia Christian Day School student decided last month for his birthday to accept donations instead of presents so he could help raise funds for The Corner Table, is a soup kitchen outreach ministry in Newton.

Gilleland learned about the non-profit from his father, Scott, who volunteers there.

Catawba County Board of Commissioners Chair Katherine W. Barnes declared a State of Emergency for Catawba County late of Monday, May 6, in response to serious flooding in several areas of the county.

Teacher arrested for peeping

A Hickory teacher made his first appearance in court at the Catawba County Justice Center on Monday for two counts of Felony Secret Peeping.

Scott William Grantham, 50, of 1371 5th St. NE in Hickory was arrested on Friday, May 3 at Arndt Middle School for the two felony charges. Grantham was an English as Second Language  teacher at the school.

Rapper arrested in Conover

The headline act for the Conover Tavern was arrested Saturday at the Holiday Inn Express in Conover for drug related offenses.

Rap artist, Sean P. Joseph from Atlanta Ga., was arrested and charged with Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver marijuana, simple assault and Possession of Scheduled III Controlled substance.
