Conover man arrested for credit card fraud

Hickory police arrested a Conover man Tuesday for unlawfully using a company fuel card to buy over $21,000 in gas.

According to police records, Joshua Aaron Williams, 35, of 5435 Circle K Dr., was charged with one count of felony

Technibilt unveils new cart design

An Alabama woman and her family were in Newton Thursday, celebrating the national launch of a product she started designing at her dining room table more than five years ago.

Drew Ann Long from Alabaster, Al. created “Caroline’s Cart,” a shopping cart to accommodate special needs children.

Weather creates many problems across county

A strong thuderstorm left a wake of destruction across much of Catawba County late Wednesday afternoon.
High winds paired with lightning damaged several residences and blocked roads with most of the damage occurring in Hickory and the eastern portion of the county.

A modular home was heavily damaged by fire at 1708 Kestrel Valley Ln., Sherrills Ford.

Sign ups being held for tournaments, 5K run/walk

The Newton Parks & Recreation Department is hosting seven events to make Soldiers Reunion even more enjoyable, including a senior citizens dance, a cornhole tournament, a softball tournament, a pet competition, a horseshoe tournament, a 5K run/walk and a bicycle ride.

Two vehicle accident claims life

July 16, 2013

A motor vehicle accident  Monday night just after 8 p.m. claimed the life of a Morganton grandfather in Catawba County.

Elvis Heavner, 54, from J.B. Craig Road in Morganton died on impact when his 1991 Oldsmobile crossed the center line and struck a 1988 GMC truck driven by Dustin Pope of Newton.

Non-profit is vandalized

Last week vandals in Conover damaged a statue that acted as a monument for the founder of Catawba County Parenting Network.

Public invited to annual meeting

July 15, 2013

The Catawba County Historical Association will hold their annual business meeting on July 28 and the public is invited to attend.

The event will highlight recent accomplishments, as well as showcase new and upcoming events and exhibits for 2014. Along with the events calendar, the membership will elect the slate of 2014 Board of Trustees and thank the outgoing board members.

Newton firefighter Randy Matthews, assigned to Newton Fire Department Engine One in the downtown station, had a busy Friday morning. The department responded to a report of strong gas fumes at an apartment complex at 222 Park Lane just before 10 a.m.

County to award $2.3 million contract

July 11, 2013

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will award the bid for a new library when they meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 15, at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.

Two Newton men sentenced in sperate drug cases

July 11, 2013

Brian Duane Martz, 34, of Newton, was convicted of Felony Possession of Cocaine,  two counts of Felony Attempted Larceny and two counts of Habitual Felon status this week in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court. The defendant was sentenced to no less than 52 months and no more than 88 months in the North Carolina Division of Adult Correction.
