Pair of guns found in shooting suspect's home

CONOVER — A shotgun and a .38-special were found inside the home of a Sunday morning shooting suspect after a search of his home.

Twenty-six year old Mee See, who appeared in court for the first time Monday, is charged with attempted murder of his girlfriend, Crystal Lor, 19, of Conover.

Thread Trail plan tries to tie county together

You could even say that it’s a master plan — one that many people might not be aware of.

Carolina Thread Trail is creating a system that will show the benefits of greenways and trails across the states of North and South Carolina.

Mundy, Robinson celebrate more than 100 years

On June 4, 1919, Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote.

That day in Catawba County, then 10-year-old Lois Mundy remembers her dad coming in to tell her mom the good news.

Ninety-four years and 16 presidents later, Mundy has never missed a chance to vote.

Mayfield mansion burning cancelled due to rain

A controlled burn scheduled on Saturday for the former mansion of Jeremy Mayfield has been cancelled.

Catawba Fire Department officials cancelled the schedule burn due to inclement weather.

Newton man arrested possession of marijuana

December 14, 2013

A Newton man was arrested early Thursday morning after a traffic stop yielded a large amount of marijuana.

Thirty-five year old Mark Anthony Farley, of 303 South Derby Ave., was stopped for speeding in his 2001 Chrysler Sebring at 2:20 a.m. on the 400 block of U.S. 70 SE.

A closer look behind Newton Public Works

NEWTON — The city of Newton may be regarded as small, but it still takes a lot of hard work to keep things running.

For the Public Works division, this includes maintaining 182 miles of water lines, 4,800 power poles, 75 miles of streets, 400 pieces of equipment and much, much more.

New facility at CVCC is officially dedicated

HICKORY — Catawba Valley Community College continued its growth on Thursday, dedicating the new Corporate Development Center.

“When we look at today’s environment, we all have to think differently,” said CVCC President Dr. Garrett D. Hinshaw. “If we aren’t thinking differently and working differently, we are going to be left behind.”

NEWTON — After electing a new Mayor pro tem during Tuesday night’s council meeting, the city of Newton made history.

For the first time ever, Newton’s mayor and mayor pro tem are both women.
