Gym doubles size as it celebrates 5 years

The Perfect Workout opened to the public in August 2008 in downtown Newton. Five years later the gym has doubled in size as well as doubled in memberships.

“Some members have been here since the beginning,” Rashidi said.

“I have some of the same people in my classes.”

Schools release early counts

School officials are saying everything has gone smoothly so far as students returned to classes starting Monday in both the Catawba County and Newton-Conover city schools.

Catawba County schools saw about 16,000 public school students walk through their doors on Monday, where 1,080 teachers awaited them.

Sarah Woody brings her children Noah and Layla to Tuttle Elementary in southeastern Catawba County early Monday for their first day of school. Noah is starting first grade and Layla is in second grade.

Local pastor organizes new church

NEWTON — While serving in the National Guard during the Gulf War, the Rev. Rick Reid said he was inspired by a chaplain.

While Reid was on the front lines, the chaplain came and collected everyone's phone number to contact families. Through that act of compassion Reid said his own goal of serving in the ministry began.

Fair to celebrate 100 years

The Hickory American Legion Fair celebrates 100 years in 2013.

Schedule to run Aug. 28 through Sept. 2, the fair will promote the milestone year with the theme  “Come celebrate with us.”

“He was probably thinking, 'I'm stuck here with this old guy,'” says Newton-native Rick Setzer. “I'd leave the school and think it wasn't getting anywhere. Then slowly, after several months, I could see little cracks. He'd talk a little bit. It became 20 questions. Then, somewhere about halfway through the year it became a discussion.”
