Catawba County Emergency Management is asking citizens who  reported damage from the July 27 flooding to remain patient as the damage assessment process continues.

Catawba County Emergency Management has formally requested disaster assistance from the State of North Carolina for victims of the July 27 flooding.

A letter asking for state disaster assistance was sent to the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management on Monday.

Unanticipated flash flood strikes county

Flash flooding from a severe thunderstorm Saturday damaged many residences, businesses and roads roads throughout Catawba County.

The unanticipated stormed started with rain approximately at 4 a.m. and did not let up till the afternoon hours Saturday.

Body discovered in Conover

A pair of friends looking for lost horses found more than they expected Sunday morning when they discovered a decomposing body on the outskirts of Conover.

According to Catawba County sheriff officials, the friends were looking for horses off of Punch Loop Road that had been spooked by the recent severe weather.

Soldiers Reunion pageants deadline extended

Registration has  been extended to July 29 for contestants in the five Miss Reunion beauty pageants—the forerunner of  Catawba County’s major patriotic festival in Newton.

The Miss Reunion title will be bestowed on area girls and young women during the series of three evenings of competition which precede the August Reunion Week activities in the Newton.

The annual celebration will start Sunday, Aug. 11 and continue each night through Aug. 25.

UW Youth Council funds programs

The Catawba County United Way Youth Council has allocated a total of $8,868 to four organizations in Catawba County whose programs directly impact the community’s youth and fall within the United Way identified impact areas of health, education or income.

Catawba County emergency crews recovered the body of a man who disappeared while fishing along the Catawba River.

Two family members went out to look for Zoua Pa Chang early Thursday and found his body floating about 150 yards downstream from Lookout Shoals Dam.
