Newton firefighter Randy Matthews, assigned to Newton Fire Department Engine One in the downtown station, had a busy Friday morning. The department responded to a report of strong gas fumes at an apartment complex at 222 Park Lane just before 10 a.m.

County to award $2.3 million contract

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners will award the bid for a new library when they meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 15, at the 1924 Courthouse at 30 North College Avenue in Newton.

Two Newton men sentenced in sperate drug cases

July 11, 2013

Brian Duane Martz, 34, of Newton, was convicted of Felony Possession of Cocaine,  two counts of Felony Attempted Larceny and two counts of Habitual Felon status this week in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court. The defendant was sentenced to no less than 52 months and no more than 88 months in the North Carolina Division of Adult Correction.

Brandes to retire from Social Services

Beth Brandes will retire as assistant director of Catawba County Social Services on July 31 following 25 years of service and a lifetime of advocacy for children and under-served populations.

Hickory man arrested on child sex charges

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office detectives have arrested a Catawba County man on a child sexual assault charge.

Lincoln County sheriff officials say that  McGarrett Eugene McManus, 30, of 2204 3rd Ave., SE, Hickory, is accused of inappropriately touching a seven year-old female. The offense took place on or about June 15 in Lincoln County.

Family turns to community for help

The family of Kevin Glenn Bowman held a press conference Wednesday to ask the community for any leads in the missing mans case.

Kevin’s parents,Grady and Judy Bowman; his aunt, Kathy Johnson; his sister, Julie Bolick and his cousin Lindsey Johnson sat down with local media to discuss the case.

Murray’s Mill celebrates 100th anniversary

2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the Catawba County Historical Association’s Historic Murray’s Mill.

On July 13, the CCHA and Historic Murray’s Mill are celebrating the accomplishments of the Murray family, who made Murray’s Mill a fixture of Catawba County for many years. 

State of emergency ends for now

Catawba County Emergency Management continues to monitor lake and river levels that caused July 5 flooding in the Carpenters Cove area of Lookout Shoals.

“The recent flooding was the result of daily rainfall from June 28 through July 5 inches Catawba County Emergency Management Coordinator, Karyn Yaussy said.

Conover man missing

A search team spent  about 10 hours, Saturday canvassing a neighborhood and wooded area looking for Kevin Glenn Bowman, a 33-year-old Conover man, who has not been seen by his family for nearly a week. Bowman was reported missing last  Tuesday. His family last saw him on June 30 when they met for dinner.
