Storm crosses county

June 27, 2013

A fast moving storm brought heavy rain and strong winds Wednesday afternoon through Catawba County but did minimal damage overall.

The most significant incident of the storm occurred at 1269 Long Drive in Newton when a large tree fell on an occupied house.

Schools recognized by program

Catawba County Health Partners’ Eat Smart Move More Catawba County (ESMM) coalition has recognized 36 Healthy Schools through the 2013 Healthy Schools Recognition Program. 

Now in its third year, the Healthy Schools Recognition Program has helped support healthier school environments for more than 20,600 students in public and private schools across the county.

Second train accident

June 25, 2013

A Norfolk Southern freight train collided with a passenger car just before noon, Tuesday at the same rail crossing where a vehicle was struck last Thursday.

According to Conover police officials, the driver of a white Chevrolet Impala was crossing the railroad on 2nd Avenue Place SE after leaving Southern Furniture Company and was struck by an eastbound freight train loaded with gravel.

Patrol seeks witnesses

June 24, 2013

The driver of an all-terrain vehicle died after an early morning accident Monday in Catawba County.

The accident happened about 5:30 a.m. Monday along Slanting Bridge Road about a half mile south of the bridge near Tradewinds Drive.

N.C. Highway Patrol officials said the rider, 30-year-old Joseph Hall, was not wearing a helmet.

No one else was injured in the crash.

Conover man arrested for sex crimes

June 21, 2013

Hickory police arrested a Conover man for child sex crimes Wednesday.

Edmundo Teodulo Bello-Gomez, 48, of 2674 10th Ave. Lane NE was charged with one count of felony attempted first-degree rape and three counts of felony indecent liberties with children.

The crimes happened in Hickory.

Boileau is sitting pretty

A youthful Newtonian has hit a North Carolina talent bullseye.

She did not win the state lottery nor is she dancing or singing on a TV show, but Suzy Nadeau Boileau has designed a decorative chair which was recently selected for the Executive Mansion in Raleigh.

A slip of the foot caused an accident Thursday morning at Eastern Catawba County Christian Ministries.

Car is no match to train

“I knew what it was when I heard the commotion,” Newton resident Howard Campbell said. “This is the second accident at that crossing that I have either heard or scene.”

Campbell who lives across the street from the accident called 9-1-1 and hoped for the best.
