March 29th
“Old School†and “New School†collided on the basketball court, Thursday at Bandys High School not only for bragging rights, but to help raise funds and awareness.
Students and faculty at the school competed in a charity basketball game with all proceeds going towards the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
March 28th
Glen Oaks Golf Club members were devastated when they woke and found their club house was destroyed during an early morning fire on Sunday, Feb. 24.
A month later, the course is still in business, but one clubhouse short. Glen Oaks General Manager Dennis Henry said the golf course plans to build back in the same location and predicts a year time frame.
A Lincoln County traffic stop in Denver, resulted in two arrests and the confiscation of a half kilo of cocaine, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Catawba County was among 17 North Carolina governments to earn recognition in the fifth North Carolina City & County Communicators’ (NC3C) Excellence in Communications Awards presented on March 21, as part of NC3C’s annual Spring Conference in Greensboro.
Maiden Mayor Bob Smyre visited Mrs. Michele’s and Mrs. Brittnie’s four year old class at Rosenwald Preschool Academy on Wednesday, to promote the importance of reading.
Smyre read a couple of books to the class and fielded questions from his audience.
March 22nd
Hugh Ivor Setzer Jr. devoted his lifetime to the public education of children in his native Catawba County. He opened one elementary school in Newton and closed a historic one during his lengthy career.
The distinguished educator died Thursday at age 86.
March 20th
Two men were arrested Monday night around 10 p.m. after a traffic stop resulted in drug charges.
Discovery High School’s “Discombobulated Delegation” took home top honors for winning the seventh annual “Red Hot Spelling Bee” for the Newton Conover Education Foundation.
In all, 22 teams competed Tuesday night. The event was held in the Newton-Conover High School Gymnasium and emceed by Michael Willard from WXRC/WNNC radio.
March 19th
Newton resident, Donna Stewart, 48, of 2133 Peanuts Lane, made her first appearance in superior court today after being arrested on Friday, March 15 for two counts of First Degree Rape of a Child.
