In the 2011-12 academic year, 13,768 N.C. students dropped out of school.
More than 8,000 of those were under the age of 17.
Two local schools have taken initiative in hopes of reducing those numbers. Newton-Conover City Schools and Hickory Public Schools have adopted legislation that will raise the drop-out age from 16 to 18, starting in the fall of 2014.
NEWTON â Rob Bliss, an assistant principal and head boys varsity basketball coach at Fred T. Foard High School, has been nominated as a National LifeChanger of the Year for the 2013-14 school year.
David Schouweiler, a science teacher at Newton-Conover High School, was recently awarded the âRubber Meets the Roadâ Award in recognition for his hard work in the classroom.
The award is given to one local teacher in the Newton-Conover City School district, who is in need of a car makeover.
