CLAREMONT — Two years ago, Rod Tatum was serving his country 6,000 miles away from home.

Following his return, the Bunker Hill wrestling coach is giving back to his fellow soldiers and teaching his wrestlers lessons in the process.

A woman who was reported missing Oct. 7 and recently located by Maiden Police is now being held at the Catawba County Detention Center.

Police say Jennifer Leigh Wynn, 36, of Maiden was responsible for a theft from her former employer, Royal Enterprises, operator of the Maiden Shell convenience store.

Horrific crash on N.C. 16

Police and emergency workers worked to remove two men from a mangled SUV after they collided with a truck at the intersection of N.C. 16 and Burris Road in northeastern Newton.

Neighbors told the Observer News Enterprise that the SUV appeared to have pulled out in front of the asphalt tanker truck, the driver of which was not reported as injured.

Moritz a big winner in Conover

Conover Mayor Lee Moritz Jr. held a strong lead over challenger Don Beal with one precinct outstanding Tuesday night, making Moritz appear the night's big winners.

As of press time, unofficial results showed him with a commanding lead of nearly 79 percent.

Shuford School annexed to bring police closer

As parents drive up to Shuford Elementary to drop up their children Tuesday morning, they may not notice anything different, but an invisible line will have moved.

The school is now within the city limits of Conover, following a public hearing and unanimous council action Monday night.

Maiden woman among 3 charged in death

A Maiden woman and a Lincolnton man and woman were arrested late Monday on charges related to the death of a Denver woman whose truck was pulled from a pond in northern Lincoln County on Monday.

Detectives say the three ran over the victim with her own truck early Friday morning.
