CONOVER — Don Barker remembers the sights and sounds of Nov. 24, 1963 like they were just yesterday.

“Muffled drums,” said Barker, a former events photographer at the Observer News Enterprise. “It haunts me to this day.”

New ordinances take effect Jan. 1 in municipalities

Today is the national observance of the Great American Smokeout, an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society in which smokers are encouraged to quit or make a plan to quit smo king.

Today also marks the official announcement of new ordinances effective Jan. 1, 2014 in the Cities of Claremont and Conover and the Town of Brookford that expand on local smoke-free policies.
