“I cried when my momma took me out of school in the 10th-grade,” said Mary Louise Sigmon-Harris, 93. “We didn’t have free text books and things. It was during the Great Depression and there wasn’t any money around. I couldn’t dress like the others, but I had a good, sharp mind.”
