Focus on luring high-paying jobs

City Council members in Conover acted unanimously this week on two initiatives intended to bring jobs to the area.

One action sets up an agreement to cooperate with Catawba Valley Community College in a program to encourage entrepreneurs.

The other measure offers incentives to existing industry HSM to bring in additional jobs at a very high rate of pay.

according to the District Attorney’s
Office.

Matthew Gene Hopkins, 24, was found guilty for his part in a 2011 homicide in Hickory in which several others, including Camyron Frederick Johnson, Robert Shannon McElwee, Emily Kathryn Starnes

Green Room murder mystery

In a case of who did it, playgoers will be on the edge of their seats at The Green Room's second production of the season, “And Then There Were None.”

The play, based on Agatha Christie's 1939 murder mystery, is set to hit the stage tonight and run for two weeks. The mystery is based on an old British nursery rhyme about ten little solders who die one by one.

Brett's Ride began in 2004, to honor Brett Gosnell as he fought pediatric cancer.

The University of Virginia student and former Hickory High School valedictorian died in August 2006, following a three-year fight with his illness.

Claremont Daze to celebrate fall

The Claremont Parks and Recreation committee invites you to attend the 17th annual Claremont Daze street festival on Friday and Saturday in downtown.

The festival's main stage will be in the Claremont City Hall Parking lot with vendors along Main Street and a kids corner of rides at the Claremont Police Department.

The Perfect Workout in Newton is celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness month by hosting a Zumbathon Glow Party fundraiser to benefit the Komen NC Foothills Race For the Cure.

The Perfect Workout owner, Sharon Rashidi said the event is in its fourth year, with the event being held for the first time at the gym.

Artisans return to Murray’s Mill

Pumpkin carver Tim Trudgeon is especially busy in September and October. After hand-carving a trailer full of pumpkins at different events across the state, he drives to his home in Mocksville, and loads up the trailer again.

This weekend he was headed to Murray’s Mill in Catawba to demonstrate his craft.
