Risk-defying rescue

Hickory Rescue Squad volunteer Hunter Hardaway hangs upside down while attaching himself to a victim hanging from the Hickory water tower during Tuesday’s drizzly morning. The rescue mission didn’t include anyone in danger but, was apart of Hardaway’s training hours for his rope technician certification.

Church's mission to educate kids

During the summer many children are lounging in the house watching TV, but they probably aren’t reading or doing math problems. Millie Baker, a first-grade teacher at Long View Elementary School decided to change all that when she started a summer tutoring program, formally known as “SLAP” at Thomas Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.

With The Corner Table soup kitchen closed for the Labor Day holiday, Center View Baptist Church members spent their day laboring to feed the hungry in the soup kitchen’s absence.
