READER POLL: How much does the hike hurt?

Newton City Council has not yet adopted its budget due to disagreement on a proposed electric rate hike of about 6 percent for the 2012-13 fiscal year.

Such a hike would increase the average Newton customer’s monthly bill by $7.43, or $89.16 a year. The average Newton power customer’s bill would climb to $123.46 per month.

Catawba County authorities launched a homicide investigation after discovering a dead body inside a burning car Thursday in rural Sherrills Ford.

Sheriff Coy Reid said investigators are searching for leads in a situation where he thinks foul play was involved.

Authorities chase suspect from Claremont to Hickory

Authorities say they chased a man from Claremont to Hickory on Thursday morning after he threatened his girlfriend, said he had a gun and stole her motorcycle.

Wilbern Carlos Springs, 36, of Deal Road in Claremont, faces child support non-compliance and non-support of child charges after he was arrested Thursday in Hickory.

Cops probe package at church

Authorities are investigating a suspicious envelope delivered to a Maiden church where a pastor made controversial anti-gay comments last month.

Providence Road Baptist Church received an envelope filled with an unidentified white substance, said Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid.
