Newton-Conover coaching hire looms

Newton-Conover school leaders say they hope to hire a high school football coach this week.

Newton-Conover City Schools (NCCS) Superintendent Dr. Barry Redmond said he contacted school board members about the coaching hire Tuesday afternoon. Redmond said he requested a Thursday morning meeting for the school board to consider approval of hiring a Red Devils coach.

Newton-Conover Rotary salutes community

Newton-Conover Rotary Club presented its two highest honors during the civic organization's annual Rotary Night event.

During Tuesday's ceremony that included scholarship announcements and prizes awarded in the club's annual raffle fund-raiser, Newton-Conover Rotary announced the recipients of the Charles R. Corriher Vocational Service Award and the Dr. William T. MacLauchlin Award.

Catawba County wrecks killed two people within 15 minutes of one other Sunday.

A Sherrills Ford man died in the first wreck on Mount Pleasant Road near Terrell just after 4:30 p.m. Highway Patrol says a 55-year-old man crossed the road's center line on his motorcycle and hit a car head-on. Troopers say speeding led to his accident.
