A Newton business owner received a national health award from the Office of the President.
Sharon Rashidi, owner of The Perfect Workout in Newton, was one of 47 individuals and health groups selected nationwide for the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition’s Community Leadership Award.
The city of Hickory plans to hike its water and sewer rates 3 percent and maintain its current 50-cent property tax rate in the coming fiscal year.
Hickory’s fiscal year 2012-13 recommended budget totals $94,791,213 for all city operations, capital improvements and debt service requirements for the upcoming year, according to a press release from the city.
For the second straight year, Conover residents may pay more for water.
The city’s recommended budget passes along a 3 percent water rate increase to citizens.
City leaders say they can’t afford to absorb the increase, which is being requested by the city of Hickory, said Conover City Manager Donald Duncan.
Three people were transported to hospitals Wednesday morning after a three-vehicle wreck on westbound Interstate 40 near Claremont.
Authorities say most of the injuries were not life-threatening.
The collision happened in a construction area near exit 135.
