Train slams into tractor-trailer

A Norfolk Southern train barreled into a tractor-trailer reportedly carrying fertilizer early Monday morning in Long View.

Authorities say the truck stalled on the tracks as the train approached a crossing at 33rd Street and Main Avenue.

Near noon Monday, Long View Police Department reported another truck was stuck at a different nearby crossing.

Heavy rains cause flooding

Steady, heavy rains fell all morning throughout Catawba County, causing flooding in some low-lying areas and precarious driving conditions on many roads.

Yards flooded in parts of Newton, including homes near Newton-Conover High School.

The O-N-E received reports of flooding near mobile homes in Claremont.

Emergency personnel report several street closings in Conover.
