Poker, barbecue event to honor late leader

Claremont rescuers and civic leaders will honor the late councilman P.J. Stanley this weekend during the city’s annual barbecue event.


The 12th annual Claremont Rescue Pig Picking and Poker Run will take place all day Saturday throughout the region.

Registration for the event begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Tilley’s Harley-Davidson in Statesville.

County's number of uninsured ranks low statewide

Catawba County has one of the lowest percentages of uninsured people in North Carolina, according to a medicine study released this week.

New data from a North Carolina Institute of Medicine study says Catawba County has about 21,000 uninsured residents ages 0-64.

That makes up about 16.5 percent of the total population, which the study says is one of the lowest percentages statewide.

Catawba County voters will be limited to one early voting site in Newton this year, compared to multiple locations in past years.

Zahra playground nearly ready

More than 350 volunteers completed the construction of equipment at the Zahra Baker All Children's Playground in Hickory this past weekend.

Rabies case reported in Newton

Catawba County recorded its fourth rabies case of 2012 last week after two dogs got into a fight with a raccoon that tested positive for the disease.
