Chemicals explode in Lenoir-Rhyne dorm

No one was injured when a chemical-filled plastic drink bottle exploded Tuesday night in a bathroom inside a Lenoir-Rhyne University dorm.

Hickory fire and police personnel responded to Morgan Dorm just after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a call of an explosion.

Longtime ‘Phantom’ to visit Newton

When he's not traveling nine months out of the year, Franc D’Ambrosio goes home. Well, he says, I guess you could call it that.

“It’s odd for me to go back to my home, I feel less comfortable,” he said.

“It takes me a few moments to get used to everything again.”

CVCC evacuated until Thursday

Police on the scene of an evacuation at Catawba Valley Community College tell The O-N-E that students and staff should not return to the school's two campuses until tomorrow.

Just before noon, a mandatory evacuation was ordered at the East and Main campuses due to a "perceived threat," according to a release from the college. The Challenger Early College High School was also evacuated.

Gingrich close to concession as Conover visit nears

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich all but conceded Wednesday that his White House campaign is over — one day before he visits Conover.

Gingrich,— who is scheduled to speak at the Sidewalk Cafe in Conover at 8 a.m. Thursday — said he expects Mitt Romney will be the GOP nominee. He called on the party to unite behind the former Massachusetts governor.

Vehicle crashes into Conover restaurant

A vehicle rammed into The Untouchables restaurant on 10th Street NW in Conover on Wednesday morning.

The restaurant's owner, Scott Gilleland, told The O-N-E his restaurant has extensive damage but plans to remain open for business.

County rallies against underage drinking

One of the nation’s prominent activists against underage drinking is urging law enforcement to take an “aggressive stance” on the issue.

Ron Bogle, a former local attorney and state judge, said he admits he’s got a bad attitude about alcohol. However, he said his real pet peeve is underage drinking.

Update: Power restored in Newton

Residents and businesses in Newton experienced power outages for the second straight day - but on Tuesday, problems didn't last long.

The city's customer service department began receiving complaints about a disruption in power service along
17th, 18th and 19th streets about 3:50 p.m.

City officials initially believed the power outage was linked to wind.

$35K in copper stolen in Conover

Police are investigating a large-scale copper theft at an abandoned manufacturing building in Conover.

Police say thieves stole more than $35,000 in copper cable from an empty building at 405 Wortha Herman Road SW in Conover within the past two weeks.

The building once housed a pillow manufacturer, but has been unoccupied for quite some time, said Conover Police Sgt. J.S. Barkley.

Gingrich to speak in Conover

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is scheduled to visit Conover on Thursday.

Gingrich's campaign website reports he will speak at a Catawba County Republican Party breakfast from 8-9 a.m. at Sidewalk Cafe on Conover Boulevard.
