'Clyde' sentenced for role in crime spree

A Georgia man pled guilty to dozens of charges Monday related to a 2011 crime spree that many locals refer to as the “Bonnie and Clyde” incident.  

Gas Prices Lower Now Than 2011

There was good news Monday for drivers in Catawba County, and throughout the Carolinas.

After rising for much of the year, gas prices in the two states dropped below levels reported a year ago.

AAA Carolinas reports that gas in North Carolina reached the benchmark on Monday, dropping to about $3.79 a gallon — about 2 cents less than April 30, 2011.

Schools seek proctors during testing period

Hundreds of Catawba County students will take end-of-year tests during the next six weeks.

The county’s three school districts need help administering those tests, and officials hope community volunteers will serve as proctors.

Catawba man injured in shootout

A Catawba man was one of three injured early Saturday morning during a shootout at a Hickory gas station.

Jamar James, 31, of Catawba, was shot in the back about 2:15 a.m. Saturday during what police believe to be a gang-related shooting at the Hickory Quality Mart Shell gas station.

Mayfield property auctioned

It appears the bank will maintain control of ex-NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield's foreclosed property in Catawba — for a price of $1.725 million.

Carolina Farm Credit owns the mortgage for Mayfield's property. The institution tendered the only bid for the property at a foreclosure auction Monday at the Catawba County Justice Center in Newton.
