Driver flees after hitting 12-year-old

Police are looking for suspects involved in a hit-and-run accident on Sunday that left a 12-year-old Claremont girl seriously injured.  

The girl was airlifted from Catawba County to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte on Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle while walking alongside Oxford School Road.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene.

Troopers with the N.C. Highway Patrol say the girl was walking with a friend alongside Oxford School Road near Bunker Hill School Road about 7 p.m. Sunday when the driver of a silver or champagne-colored SUV struck her in the back.

Arrest order issued for Adam Baker

An order for Adam Baker's arrest was issued Monday in Lenoir District Court.

Baker, who voluntarily departed the United States for Australia in January, was scheduled to appear in Caldwell County court Monday on a misdemeanor charge of failure to return rental property.

The arrest order came on a charge of failure to appear, and a secured bond of $2,000 was issued.

On Jan. 19, Baker left the United States on a flight bound for Australia with the remains of his 10-year-old daughter Zahra. A deportation order by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement already had been issued.

Mayfield sidekick charged

A Hickory man seen with Jeremy Mayfield last year at the site of reported trailer thefts surrendered Monday after being indicted on four counts of felony larceny.

Rusty Alex Canipe, of 232-C 14th Ave. Drive SW, Hickory, turned himself in to the Caldwell County Magistrate’s Office. He was issued a $100,000 unsecured bond.

The charges are a result of a year-long investigation into the larceny of trailers and furniture that were stolen Feb. 26, 2011, from the former Anderson Truck Lines, located at 2698 Hickory Blvd. in Hudson.

Volunteers continue tornado aid

Catawba County's Red Cross chapter continues to help dozens of Burke County residents get back on their feet following January tornadoes.

Tornadoes ripped through small communities just across the Burke County line in January, destroying or damaging at least 97 homes.

Mobile homes in the Icard community were turned to shreds, and residents lost everything.

Now, those residents are getting a little help putting their lives back together.

Dog rescued from burning home

Firefighters rescued a dog from a burning home Monday just before the structure’s roof collapsed.


Crews responded to a structure fire about 10:40 a.m. Monday at the end of Turn Four Drive off Whitener Road between the Blackburn and Propst Crossroads communities.

The home was destroyed, but no one was inside when it caught fire.

Statewide tornado drill Wednesday

North Carolina will test its tornado-preparation plans Wednesday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) will conduct a statewide tornado drill at 9:30 a.m. on all weather radios and public alert systems, including local TV and radio stations.

NWS and Gov. Bev Perdue encourage schools and businesses across the state to practice tornado drills and enact safety plans at the same time.

It's Severe Weather Awareness Week in the state, according to declarations by Perdue and the N.C. Department of Public Safety.
