Claremont and Catawba fire departments responded to a house fire at 1300 Woodhaven Lane, Claremont around 4:45 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29. The family of five was not a home at the time of the fire, but the family did lose their dog. Claremont Fire Chief Gary Sigmon said a neighbor reported the fire. Sigmon said the incident was an electrical fire that started in a back bedroom with a power strip.

A tradition at Bandys High School wasn’t forgotten on Jake Ziegler and Ray Pierce as their school parking spaces were painted on Monday, Oct. 29. The school came together to show respect Monday, with groups of students who painted the school spirit rock remembrance to both seniors. Groups of students also painted the best friends’ parking spaces, located right next to one another.
Volunteers with Community United Effort (CUE) Center for Missing Persons decided late Sunday to revisit a small section of I-20 near the Wateree River in hopes of finding a clue to the whereabouts of Jake Ziegler and Ray Pierce.
A dozen volunteers from Florida, Virginia, and the two Carolinas chopped their way into the ravines leading to the river a little after 4 p.m.
St. Stephens High School gym was filled with nervous students, proud parents and observant judges during the fall semester Science Festival on Thursday, Oct. 25. Some students started practicing their speeches at 5:30 p.m., in hopes of impressing the judges enough to become one of the top three winners at the Science Festival.
The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is continuing the investigation and efforts to resolve complaints that Midstate Mills Inc., of Newton, failed to pay farmers for wheat delivered in recent months.
“Something has got to happen today (Friday) for Midstate Mills to keep their license, “ said Assistant Agriculture commissioner David McLeod.

Construction continues Thursday, Oct. 24 on the Newton Depot Southeastern Narrow Gauge and Shortline Museum. The construction of the museum will complete phase two of a three part project at the Newton Depot.

Conover Police Department officer A.R. Williams investigates a two-vehicle accident at Thornburg Drive and I-40. The accident delayed motorists Wednesday morning when Cynthia Harmon in a state-owned van, turned in front of Justin Shannon in a N.C. DMV License and Theft cruiser.
