Catawba County education and business leaders are assembling the pieces of a workforce training puzzle that they say will make futures brighter for all ages.
Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) announced Wednesday morning it now operates the Champions of Education (COE) and Education Matters programs that serve students in the county through advocacy events and business partnerships.
Education Matters and COE will operate as part of CVCC's Student and Community Engagement Division. The partnership became official Oct. 1.
As Catawba County's child population becomes more racially diverse, Newton-Conover City Schools (NCCS) leaders say they are emphasizing the development of strong reading skills at the elementary level.
Fifth-graders are helping third-graders with reading at Shuford Elementary. High school students are scheduled to work with Thornton Elementary students on vocabulary and reading skills. Second-grade students at South Newton Elementary are grouped into science classes based on their reading levels.
The wheels on the bus go "roundabout."
That’s the phrase students at the new Newton-Conover Middle School may be singing as they ride home from school next year.
The main entrance at the new, state-of-the-art school will be flanked by a traffic roundabout instead of a four-way stop or signal light.
It is the first roundabout in Catawba County on a state or municipal road.
Newton’s newest mayor was installed in office Tuesday night, and moments later, Newton City Council appointed her mayoral challenger to fill her unexpired council term.

For the first time in Newton's 150-year history, a woman has sworn to "faithfully execute" the duties of the office of mayor to the "best of her ability."
With her son Charles Stedman holding a Bible and her family surrounding her, Anne Petree Stedman was officially installed as Newton's mayor on Tuesday.

Newton Fire Department’s new training trailer is a lot more than a box with fake smoke.
The $120,000 structure has a repelling wall, roof-pitch simulators, moveable breech walls, a maze and a burn room that heats up to more than 1,000 degrees, among other features.

The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will close the right lane of eastbound Interstate 40 at mile marker 124 in Hickory at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to repair a 60-foot section of highway.
Weather permitting, the work will be completed no later than Friday, according to NCDOT.
The concrete slab under the highway has deteriorated and will be replaced. Once that is completed, crews will repave the highway. The paving work will be done during the day while temperatures are above 40 degrees, according to NCDOT.
