August 26th
Multiple wrecks in Newton left one woman dead and three others injured Friday.
Marie P. Hewitt, of Newton, was killed in a two-car t-bone collision at the intersection of N.C. 16 and Burris Road Friday morning.
Hewitt was heading west on Burris Road and approached a stop sign at the intersection of N.C. 16. Â After pulling away from the stop sign, Hewittâs 1989 Ford Escort was struck on the right side by a 2010 Chrysler mini-van driven by Danny Mosteller, of Hildebran, said Newton Police Maj. Kevin Yarborough.

Burglars broke into a Conover pharmacy with a bag full of tools, but left with only their wrists wrapped in steel.
âšPolice arrested two men early Wednesday morning after they broke a window to the Medicap Pharmacy in Conover and were found with a bag full of burglary tools.

The roar of school bus engines and the sight of children climbing aboard the "big cheese" marks the start of another school year.
However, as Catawba County Schools sends nearly 250 school buses to serve the county's three school systems, the overseer of school transportation in the county is forced to do more with less.
For the past ten years, Nelson Clarkâs life has revolved around Harley Davidson.
He loved to ride, but not just for himself. Every year, Clark rode in charity events and fundraisers, including an annual even for kids at Conover School.
âHe did the Christmas toy run every winter and was always involved in charities,â said Ginger Mitchell, Clarkâs sister.
On Tuesday, Clark was killed in a traffic accident doing the thing he loved most â riding his Harley. Â
Clark, of Newton, was killed after his motorcycle hit a car that failed to stop for a red light.
Police have named Camyron Fredrick Johnson as a suspect in connection with the murder of a Hickory taxicab driver Tuesday night.
Johnson is a 22-year-old white male that weighs 180 to 190 pounds and stands 5 feet 10 inches tall. Police consider him armed and dangerous.
He is wanted in connection with the murder of Adam Todd Williams, 32, of Hickory, who was murdered Tuesday night after responding to a fare near the LongHorn Steakhouse parking lot on U.S. 70.
August 23rd
As school systems statewide work to implement policies mandated by the Gfeller-Waller Concussion Awareness Act, Newton-Conover City Schools is "ahead of the curve."
The measure was signed into law in June, and NCCS Superintendent Dr. Barry Redmond said the school system began immediately laying the groundwork required to improve awareness, documentation and treatment.
School officials statewide are tackling the problem of concussions and traumatic brain injuries before a bump on the head ends an athlete's life.
A man pistol whipped a woman while she was bathing Monday while breaking into a Newton home and stealing money and pills. Â
Police say Patrick Steven Shuford, 26, of Newton, broke into a mobile home at 4489 Athens Drive in Newton about 11:30 a.m. Monday demanding money from Greg Allen Beard, 29, who lives at the residence.
âHe came in and was shouting âWhereâs my money? Whereâs my money?ââ said Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid.
Reid said the victim knew Shuford, but did not know what he was talking about.
