A four-car accident in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near exit 136 left four people injured Friday.
One man was critically injured in the accident and was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte via MedCenter Air helicopter. The other three drivers suffered non-life threatening injuries, with one man and woman taken to Catawba Valley Medical Center in road units, said Claremont Fire Chief Gary Sigmon.
Catawba County commissioners approved several changes to their proposed budget that will increase their anticipated financial plan by about $93,500.
After listening to lobbying comments from two county citizens during a public hearing Thursday, the board decided to fund a secretarial position in the countyâs Cooperative Extension office, as well as three other budget areas.
St. Stephens Elementary School students are singing and dancing about the benefits of making healthy lifestyle decisions.
On Friday, a collection of fifth and sixth grade students from St. Stephens asked their fellow classmates âHow Fit are You?â during an original musical written by the schoolâs music teacher, June Robison.
The purpose of the song and dance numbers is simpleâeducation â a theme outlined in the musicalâs final number âYouâve Got the Power:"

One man is dead and a woman injured after an early morning Hickory shooting.
Eric Lynn Icenhour, 25, of Alexander County, was pronounced dead on the scene after Hickory Police responded to the shooting in the 900 block of Second Street Southwest in the area of Blue Ridge Heights apartments. Icenhour and an unidentified woman were riding in a car at about 2:45 a.m. Friday when both were shot.
The woman was injured in the shooting, but was treated and released from the hospital.
Hickory Police are investigating.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) â A federal grand jury charged two-time presidential candidate John Edwards on Friday with soliciting and covering up the secret spending of more than $925,000 to hide his mistress and their baby during the peak of his 2008 campaign for the White House.
The grand jury's indictment in the case of USA v. Johnny Reid Edwards contained six counts, including conspiracy, four counts of receiving illegal campaign contributions and one count of false statements.
