Oklahoma police kill Hickory man

March 3, 2011

Police say the Hickory man shot and killed by Oklahoma officers was going through a difficult time and wanted law enforcement to take his life.

Police fired eight shots at Brian Dollarhide, 30, in Perry, Okla., early Tuesday morning in what officers are calling suicide by cop.

Perry Police Chief Brian Thomas said Thursday that Dollarhide was separated from his wife, who reported Dollarhide had suicidal thoughts.

Baby wins photo contest

An area toddler will be featured on a North Carolina travel magazine cover after she was selected among hundreds of other children to win a photo contest.

The photograph Matt and Alicia Anderson snapped of their then 8-month-old daughter, Ava, will appear on the 2011 cover of Beach Times magazine after an online contest, where Facebook users voted for their favorite vacation photograph among eight finalists.

Prom on a budget

The dress, the shoes, the flowers and the dinner — those items can add up to a costly prom night for area students.

But students and their parents don't have to spend a lot of money to ensure a fun, safe and memorable prom night. Area organizations are working to provide clothes and services to prom-going students at little or no cost.

Students at Hickory High School will have the option to get free evening wear for their prom night through the school's sixth annual prom closet.
