3 incumbents keep seats

The newly elected Catawba County Board of Commissioners won't appear any differently than it has during the board's last two meetings.
Republican incumbents Kitty Barnes, Lynn Lail and Randy Isenhower won seats on the board, outing Democrat challengers Carolyn Jones Connor and Crystal D. Smith.
Isenhower, who was appointed to serve on the board last month, was the top vote-getter of the night, receiving 28 percent of the votes.
"I appreciate everyone who voted for me tonight, and I look forward to serving Catawba County," Isenhower said.

Close call in CCS board race

It was a tight race for the Catawba County Schools Board of Education, but two incumbents held on to their seats, while voters chose two new board members.
Incumbents Charlie Wyant and Sherry Butler will remain on the Board of Education for another four years.
Wyant, who served on the board for almost 20 years, said this year's campaign was one of the toughest yet.
"It's been good and educational," Wyant said of the election campaign. "I'm pleasantly surprised. Naturally, I'm happy about it. I felt like it would be a close race, but I had no idea that I might be at the top."

Gaither wins DA

Incumbent Jay Gaither will continue serving Catawba County residents as District Attorney for the 25th Judicial District.
Gaither nabbed 60.68 percent of the almost 75,000 votes cast in Catawba, Caldwell and Burke counties as of press time Tuesday. Democrat challenger Jason Parker received 33.29 percent of votes, and Libertarian T.J. Rohr received 6 percent.
"(The victory) feels like a victory for the District Attorney's Office," Gaither said. "Being elected by this district is very gratifying."
Parker declined to comment about Tuesday's election results.

Chief deputy named sheriff

There's a new sheriff in town, but the new law enforcement leader for Catawba County is no stranger.
Republican Coy Reid received almost 74 percent of the general election vote Tuesday to defeat Democratic challenger Doris Kirby. According to unofficial results from Catawba County Board of Elections, the sheriff's department long-time chief deputy received 30,636 votes, compared to Kirby's 10,365 votes.

HPD processing clues

Zahra Baker was reported missing almost one month ago, but the search for her whereabouts hasn't slowed.
Investigators continue to follow leads, process information and conduct interviews in the hope of locating the 10-year-old girl, who is presumed dead.
HPD Maj. Clyde Deal said Tuesday officials are processing evidence collected during recent searches, but police have yet to receive any results from the lab.

Police: Prosthesis was Zahra's

Police confirmed Monday that the prosthetic leg found in Caldwell County belonged to a disabled child now missing for more than three weeks.
Hickory Police Department said in a press release they confirmed the prosthesis match using serial numbers on the leg.
Ten-year-old Zahra Baker lost her lower left leg to bone cancer. Zahra's hearing was also damaged during cancer treatment, forcing her to wear hearing aids.

Laps 4 Labs

To get a wireless computer lab up and running, Balls Creek Elementary students are doing some running of their own.
Students, faculty and volunteers raced around the school track Monday to raise money for a new computer lab in the school.
The project, called Laps 4 Labs, is designed to involve students in the computer lab fundraising process, while keeping them physically fit at the same time.
Students and members of the school's Parent-Teacher Organization were asked to find area businesses willing to donate to the school's goal of $10,000.

County leaf collection starts

Brightly colored fall foliage is everywhere in Catawba County, but someone must clean up the leaves once they fall to the ground. Area municipalities offer leaf collection for residents, and each area's collection schedules, requirements and services are different.
