David Colan Swink, age 86, of Conover, NC passed away Friday, June 27, 2014 at his residence. The Swink family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.

Leroy Hawks, age 78, of Conover, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at his residence. Drum Funeral Home and Cremations in Hickory is honored to be serving the Hawks family.

New Direction for the Arts

The Newton Auditorium has a new director ready to take on the challenge of reviving the old auditorium while bringing more cultural arts to Catawba County. "I like to see good art happening, and would love to see it here," new director Ingrid Anna-Lisa Keller said.

Last week, Ingrid Anna-Lisa Keller took the position and has started to bring back the love for the arts.

Newton man arrested for BB&T robberies

On Thursday June 26, Joshua Paul Wilson of 1918 Ellick Drive Newton, NC 28658 was charged with 2 Counts of Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon. The charges stem from a robbery on April 4th at BB&T bank in Maiden, and May 20th at BB&T in Claremont. Also, Wilson has warrants for Robber with a Dangerous Weapon that occurred on June 13th at BB&T in Valdese.

BREAKING: Newton Police investigating death

The Newton Police Department is currently investing the death of a woman on Saturday morning.

Police were called to 100 W. 17th Street at 10:37 a.m. on Saturday to the apartment of 31-year-old Maggie Daniels.

Daniels, a Cleveland, Ohio native, spent this past year at Discovery High School.

Hickory-Shelby game postponed until Sunday

June 27, 2014

Friday night's Area IV West Division game between Hickory Post 48 and Shelby Post 82 was postponed.

The contest is rescheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Keeter Stadium/Veterans Field in Shelby.

Post 48 (10-11, 8-8 in Area IV West) has two remaining games left in the regular season, including at Henkel-Alley Field on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Burke Post 21.

NBA Draft aids Charlotte's frontcourt, shooting

The Charlotte Hornets used Thursday’s NBA Draft to solidying their backcourt and added one of best shooters in this year’s rookie class.

After he dropped surprisingly out of the top five, forward Noah Vonleh went No. 9 to the Hornets.

General manager Rich Cho was surprised when Vonleh fell in the team’s lap.

Lawsuit: DA reaches too far

A lawsuit accusing Catawba, Burke and Caldwell County District Attorney Jay Gaither of sexual harassment was filed shortly before 5 p.m. on Thursday. The lawsuit was filed in Federal Court in Statesville.
