The St. Stephens girls soccer team came up short in its first appearance in the 3A state championship game.
Christina Gibbons netted two goals and Morgan Reid scored another leading Cardinal Gibbons to a 3-0 victory against the Lady Indians in the 3A final at Dail Stadium on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

The St. Stephens girls soccer team competes on Saturday for a chance to win the program’s first state championship.
The Indians have won only four state titles in school history, including three in baseball (1971-73) and one in cheerleading (1987).
The wrestling team also finished as state runner-up in 2001.
St. Stephens junior defender Amanda Hall is making up for lost time after suffering a grade two strained MCL in her left knee earlier this season.
Hall suffered the injury in a game at Alexander Central on March 28.

William Edgar Melvin, Sr., 82, of Hickory, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Catawba Regional Hospice. The Melvin family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home in Hickory.
The Newton City Council on Tuesday recognized Addie Shuford as the 2013 Unity Award recipient. Mayor Anne P. Stedman presented Shuford with the plaque recognizing her contributions to the city.
The award recognizes a Newton resident, business or industry that has contributed to racial and cultural harmony in the city of Newton.

During World War I soldiers brought back the red poppy flowers from the battlefields of Belgium. They were the only flowers to grow on the embattled fields.

Caroline and Olivia Holmes, and Taylor and Jordan Black are two pairs of siblings on the squad.
Bandys linebacker Colton Medlin has been invited to the Blue-Grey National Super Combine.

After suffering a compression fracture in his back earlier this season and spending six weeks out of action, Denny Hamlin is finally back on track.
Hamlin turned a lap of 27.604 (195.624 mph) to win the pole for Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Hamlin finished second in his first full race back two weeks ago at Darlington Raceway in the Southern 500.
Norma Jean Hollar Pharr, 87, of Claremont, went home to be with her Lord and beloved husband, Mitch, on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at her residence. The Pharr family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremations in Conover.
