Dorothy âDotâ Rose Eckard Sipe, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed peacefully into eternal glory with her Creator on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 after a period of declining health at Conover Nursing Home. The Sipe family has entrusted arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover, NC.
Survivors often have hills to climb. For Carla Davis, those became physical hills at the first annual Get Your Rear In Gear 5k Run/Walk in Hickory last year.
Davis is a 10-year colon cancer survivor who firmly believes that early detection of colon cancer saves lives. She will be serving as a team captain for the Get Your Rear in Gear event on March 22.

Catawba County gets a chance to shine in the television spotlight this weekend.
Red Wolf Farm in Maiden will be featured on an episode of "Food Court Wars,â which airs Sunday at 8 p.m. on Food Network.

Margaret Elizabeth Setzer Starnes, 91, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother of Granite Falls, peacefully passed away March 8, 2014, at Catawba Valley Regional Hospice. The Starnes family has entrusted service arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Cremations in Newton.
Construction is well underway for Catawba County's new Animal Shelter in Newton.
Along with the shelter comes an extension of a current partnership between the county and the Humane Society of Catawba County.
The shelter will provide new features and additions to the Humane Society's current location in Hickory, and both will be utilized to get county animals to good homes.
