Bears upset Trojans; Bandys still clinches CVAC title

The Bunker Hill baseball team spoiled “Senior Night” for Bandys, but the Trojans were the ultimate winners on Tuesday night.

By virtue of Draughn’s 10-6 loss to Maiden in extra innings, the Trojans claim their first outright CVAC title since 2001.

Maiden man wins Doc Watson Guitar Championship

Maiden musician Michael Ballard won the MerleFest 2013 Doc Watson Guitar Championship contest on Friday, April 26.

“I think MerleFest is the best festival in the United States,” Michael Ballard told crowd at the Austin Stage – and that was before he won MerleFest’s annual Doc Watson Guitar Championship.

Accident blocks busy road

A lunchtime single vehicle accident Tuesday, on West 7th Street in Newton closed the road for an hour.

A 2003 Mazda van driven by Lesley Craig, 46, from Hickory, was traveling east on West 7th Street when she drove off the side of the road and failed to regain control for 375 feet before striking a guard rail and coming to a rest at the entrance to the Greenway Trail.

Many deem this signing period after the NFL Draft as the "eighth round," where teams agree to terms with players who were not selected during last week's draft.
