Jessica Campbell was raised in Catawba, attended church at Olivet Baptist Church and sang the national anthem at Bandys High School -- she's nothing more than Catawba County born-and-bred.

Lights Out Downtown sign shop to shut doors

A store that has been lighting up downtown Newton with colorful neon signs and antique displays for years is closing down for good on Feb. 20.

Neon By Ernie’s Sign Shop, operated by Ernie McSwain, said it was a financial decision to close the shop.

Conover PD searching for armed robbery suspect

On Monday, Feb. 9, around 11:45 p.m., Conover Police Department responded to a call regarding an armed robbery at the Kangaroo Express gas station at Highway 16 North in Conover.

The suspect entered the facility wearing a white mask and all black clothing, armed with a honey knife, according to Conover Police Chief Steve Brewer

Car hauler flips on Hwy. 16

Around noon on Wednesday, a Chevy truck towing a trailer loaded with two other Ford vehicles was heading south on Hwy. 16 when it flipped over near the Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet dealership.

Both southbound lanes of Hwy. 16 were closed while traffic was redirected around the crash.

Newton native Hoots is at home with Tar Heels

Eric Hoots bleeds Carolina blue.

The son of a University of North Carolina grad and Newton pastor, Hoots grew up cheering for his beloved Tar Heels on the basketball court.

“My dad kind of fueled my love for Carolina and also my love for basketball,” Hoots said. “That’s where it came from.”

CCS Releases Holistic Grades Report

Catawba woman arrested for embezzlement

Following an almost two month long investigation, a Catawba County woman has been charged with embezzlement from the business where she worked as a bookkeeper for six years.

Donna Marie Varin, 50, of 2540 Pinacle Drive, Catawba, NC was charged with one felony count of Embezzlement in Excess of $100,000.

Newton's gone to the Birds

Like a scene from the Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds," Newton is being invaded.

In case you haven't noticed, black vultures have made themselves at home throughout downtown, roosting at places like Beth Eden Lutheran Church, the Newton Water Tower and the old Goins Enterprise Commercial Warehousing building.

Tigers take down 3A dual state title

Fred T. Foard wrestler Brycen Walker leaps into the arms of head coach Mike Carey in celebration of his 4-2 overtime win against Morehead’s William Pryor on Saturday. The Tigers (40-1) won their 67th straight home match, defeating the Panthers to earn their second dual team state title in the past three years. Walker was named Most Outstanding Wrestler.
