Margaret Elizabeth Setzer Starnes, 91, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother of Granite Falls, peacefully passed away March 8, 2014, at Catawba Valley Regional Hospice. The Starnes family has entrusted service arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Cremations in Newton.
Construction is well underway for Catawba County's new Animal Shelter in Newton.
Along with the shelter comes an extension of a current partnership between the county and the Humane Society of Catawba County.
The shelter will provide new features and additions to the Humane Society's current location in Hickory, and both will be utilized to get county animals to good homes.

Mary Norris Drum, 95 of Hickory, passed away Friday, March 7, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice. Bass-Smith Funeral Home is serving the family of Mary Norris Drum.
Robin Sharpe Benfield, 56 of Claremont, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice. The Benfield family is in the care of Robert F. Bennett, Funeral Service Licensee, 828-465-2111.
Yet another winter storm hit Catawba County on Friday. While the precipitation didnâ€™t reach as high as previous storms,Â the impact was still felt Â on the roads.Â
Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said that a total of 56 accidents were reported as of late afternoonÂ Friday.
Fourteen ofÂ thoseÂ resulted in injuries but none of them were serious.
The Bandys girls basketball team tries to advance to the 2A state championship game and claim the 2A West Regional title on Saturday.
The undefeated Lady Trojans (30-0) take on Franklin (24-3) in Saturdayâ€™s West title game at 1 p.m. at Fleming Gymnasium on the campus of UNC-Greensboro.
Due to weather that arrived late Thursday and continued into the morning hours, all three school systems in Catawba County are closed on Friday.
Newton-Conover City, Catawba County and Hickory Public schools all announced their closings on Friday morning. There is an optional teacher work day for all three systems on Friday, as well.
The city of Claremont is about to get a hot new makeover by its very own citizens.
The city has designated six to eight fire hydrants in the downtown area to be reimagined into pieces of community artwork.
