Ray Junior Kiziah, 70 of Newton died Monday, November 3rd, 2014 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. The Kiziah family has entrusted arrangements to Jenkins Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Newton-#828-464-1555.

Maxine Wilkinson Bumgarner, age 78, of Maiden passed away Monday, November 03, 2014 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Bumgarner family.

As Election Day continued to progress, Newton and Conover voting precincts steadily saw voters.

“I think that there are a lot of things on the ballot that people are concerned about,” said Northside Fire Station precinct worker Sue Laney. “We’ve had a lot more traffic than usual.”

An air of excitement flooded the top floor of Blue Moon Tavern in Newton as the final ballots were counted in Catawba County. Local Republican candidates gathered there Tuesday evening to watch as the unofficial election results brought victory for many in attendance.

Tigers seek redemption tonight against Mavericks

The Fred T. Foard boys soccer team has a rare chance at redemption tonight when it hosts Marvin Ridge in the third round of the 3A playoffs.

The Tigers (19-5-2) played the Mavericks (15-7-1) last season in the 3A West Region finals — a game that featured high-speed winds and cold rains turning into snow as the game progressed.
