Vickie Lynn Kelley Beaver, 51, of Lincolnton, was promoted to glory Thursday, June 2, 2011, at her son’s residence. Burke Mortuary in Maiden is serving the Beaver family.
The Rev. Frank James Blackburn, 70, of Taylorsville, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at Frye Regional Medical Center. A gathering of friends and family will be at 4 p.m. Friday, June 3, 2011, at Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel in Newton.
Conover was one of 26 state municipalities to receive a grant for its Conover Station park.
State officials announced the award of $7.6 million in grants from the N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund. Conover received $333,744, from the grant program.
"I want to thank our staff for preparing such a great grant application," said Conover Mayor pro Tem Kyle Hayman. "Conover was competing with 80 grant applications across the state and only 26 received funding. I think this says a lot about our project, and I appreciate our state officials for recognizing the value of Conover Station."
After tweaking budget numbers the past two weeks, Newton City Council is preparing to consider a budget plan that will leave property taxes, and water and sewer rates unchanged for the year ahead.
The $40 million budget for fiscal year 2011-12 will also provide a 1 percent cost-of-living increase for city employees, although it will also make dental insurance optional and raise other health insurance rates on employees' dependents. The proposed budget will increase electric customers' rates 5.5. percent.
A North Carolina woman charged with killing her 10-year-old disabled stepdaughter has pleaded not guilty to unrelated drug charges in federal court.
U.S. Magistrate David Kessler on Thursday ordered that 42-year-old Elisa Baker be held without bond. No trial date has been set.
Prosecutors say Baker distributed and planned to distribute drugs including oxycodone and hydrocodone between 2006 and 2010. They also say she conspired with others to distribute drugs.
Baker faces seven counts. Conviction on all the charges could bring a prison sentence of up to 140 years.

Catawba County Commissioners met Tuesday in public sessions to iron out a 2011-12 budget.
Catawba County officials are considering eliminating fire alarm mutual aid funding to the 14 fire departments in the county. The funding, about $2,400 to each department annually, has been around for 40 years and has "no history," said County Manager Tom Lundy.
A public hearing is scheduled for June 2 at 7 p.m. in the 1924 Courthouse. The public is invited to attend.
When multiple explosions triggered a raging fire at a chemical storage facility in Hudson on Saturday, Caldwell County called out for help.
Caldwell firefighters were battling a blaze that was out of control at the RPM Wood Finishes Group plant, so they put out a call to Catawba County firefighters for additional personnel.
In less than an hour, more than 50 Catawba County firefighters and 10 apparatuses were headed to Hudson to assist.
