Summers gets all-American honors

A love for soccer at age 4 led Sabrina Summers to a national all-American team.
Summers, 17 and a senior at St. Stephens High School, was one of 37 female soccer players from across the nation selected to win an award on the National High School Scholar All-American Team.
“I was kind of surprised,” Summers said, adding her busy school and soccer schedules kept her mind occupied and off of her coach’s nomination.
St. Stephens head soccer coach Chuck Davis nominated Summers for the prestigious award because of her strong athletic and academic skills.

Joseph Loyal Winebarger, 49, of Conover, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2010, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.  The Winebarger family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Conover.  

Ellis Roy “Buck” Pugh, 78, of Conover, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2010, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.  The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jerome Walker will officiate.  

Financial stability Catawba's top goal

One year ago, Catawba Mayor Vance Readling said two controversial construction projects were dividing the town.

Now, the projects are delayed indefinitely in light of financial restraints, but town officials are looking to the coming months to get Catawba's budget back on track.

Readling cited budgetary stability as his top goal for the town in the coming year.

"I think we're going to have to focus on all aspects of the budget, from revenue to expenditures," Readling said.

Holiday cheer for elderly population

The elderly population represents about 13 percent of United States residents.

That 13 percent translates to about one in eight Americans, according to the Administration on Aging.

Of the elderly population, millions of people live in nursing homes or are confined to their residences because of serious illnesses or disabilities.

But thanks to area agencies, senior citizens living in Catawba County can enjoy the comforts of the holiday season.

Fire at Hickory Springs

A fire was reported Tuesday at a manufacturing facility in Conover.
Firefighters arrived on the scene at Hickory Springs Manufacturing Company at 9:51 a.m., according to the Conover Fire Department.
The fire, which occurred in the building's manufacturing area called the "carousel," was extinguished before firefighters arrived. The scene was under control at 10:04 a.m., and Conover firefighters used the building's ventilation system to remove any remaining smoke from the building.
No one was injured.

Comer honored by Panthers

CHARLOTTE – Before the start of their game Sunday at Bank of America Stadium, the Carolina Panthers took time to honor a group of high school football players from across the Carolinas.

Newton-Conover lineman Mikey Comer was among them.

Comer was at the stadium Sunday before kickoff on a stage in the west end of the field. His name was called over the public address system and his face on the giant screen as one of the Carolina Panthers’ Community Captains.

SSHS to get $1.4M kitchen renovation

St. Stephens High School will receive an upgraded kitchen and lunchroom, thanks to leftover funds from previous projects.

SSHS' kitchen and lunchroom are part of the school's original construction dating back to 1963, according to Catawba County Schools interim superintendent Glenn Barger.

The renovated lunchroom is expected to seat at least 444 students at a time. However, the CCS Board of Education opted to add a future seating area to their plan as an alternate for bidders. The potential area can add 120 more seats, equaling 564 seats for students in the lunchroom.

Pets killed in mobile home fire

December 20, 2010

Several animals died Monday after a mobile home fire in Hickory.

A cat, a female dog and her five puppies died in the blaze at 512 10th Street SW in lot 8. No other injuries were reported.

Hickory Fire Department responded to the scene at 1:16 p.m., and firefighters found flames coming from the front of the structure.

They responded to the scene with two engines, one ladder truck and one command vehicle. The fire was under control at 1:43 p.m.

Thread trail master plan approved

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners on Monday unanimously approved a master plan for a diverse collection of trails in the county and surrounding areas.

The approval qualifies Catawba County for future grant funding in the design, acquisition and construction of the master plan.

Catawba County senior planner Mary George and thread trail community coordinator Randi Gates presented the master plan to the Board of

Commissioners at its meeting Monday in the 1924 Courthouse in Newton.

The master plan contains nine priority segments and includes six routes in Catawba County.
