Warning: Winter weather to come

Hazardous winter weather conditions are headed for Catawba County tonight.
According to the National Weather Service, there is a chance of snow before 4 a.m. and then snow and sleet are likely in Thursday's early morning hours. Officials said less than an inch of snow and sleet are expected. Wednesday's low is 26 degrees.
Going into Thursday, there is rain with a possibility of freezing rain expected with a high near 41 into early afternoon. Rain is expected to continue after 2 p.m. and end in the early evening hours.

Now for something completely different — well, sort of — I’m back in the sports saddle at The O-N-E, and this past week the duty took me to my first-ever swim meet. The experience was certainly educational and entertaining, so much that I want to make sure Wednesday night’s meet at Lenoir-Rhyne University won’t be my last.

NCMS notches 100th straight win

It has been a long time since Newton-Conover Middle School has lost a wrestling match in Catawba County.
In fact, Tuesday’s 52-26 win over Maiden Middle School marks the 100th straight victory the young Red Devils have notched.
“This is bigger than any championship we could actually win ... That’s 100 consecutive wins over the past eight years,” said Newton-Conover Middle School wrestling coach Ben Crawford. “We have been undefeated countywide. We had to get four wins this season. We ran off three in a row and hit the fourth one here.”

Bandys builds for the future

Bandys Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jason Drum wants people to pass by every Bandys station in Catawba County and say, "That's a Bandy's Fire Department."

That dream will soon become a reality with the expansion, renovation and construction of two Bandys fire stations, unifying the department's structure and design and helping the department prepare for the future.

Former mayor recovers after being hit by car

A former Claremont mayor is recovering Tuesday after being struck by a car while walking across the street.

Glenn Morrison was walking across Depot Street near the intersection of Frazier Drive in Claremont to check his mailbox Monday evening when he was struck by an oncoming car, said Claremont Police Department Capt. Gary Bost.

Thrift-store thief steals bargains

An unknown suspect robbed a thrift store Tuesday in Newton, leaving the store's owner with one clue about his identity: a blue and silver bicycle.

Martha Navarrete, owner of Martha's Bargain Thrift Store on West 20th Street in Newton, noticed something was amiss in her store when she walked into the building Tuesday about 9:45 a.m.

"Everything was in disorder, so I said, 'Something's not normal,'" Navarrete said.

She examined the store more closely and discovered something was wrong: her store was broken into.

$2.7M grants gets manufacturer

Conover Station will welcome a new form of manufacturing to its site after $2.7 million in grants closed a deal that could potentially bring numerous jobs to Catawba County.

Manufacturing Solutions Center, currently located at Catawba Valley Community College’s East Campus, takes backyard ideas and creates a product to be sold across the world.

Soda machine causes fire

A Conover fast food restaurant was evacuated Tuesday after an electrical fire broke out.

An employee of Zaxby's restaurant on N.C. 16 called 9-1-1 shortly before 1 p.m. to report an electrical fire in the restaurant's fountain drink machine.

About 10 Conover firefighters responded to the scene and turned off power to the machine, causing the flames to die down, said Conover Fire Chief J. Mark Hinson.

Shuford selected for All-Star game

Lenoir-Rhyne University's Marcus Shuford has been selected to play in the 2011 Cactus Bowl.
The game is scheduled to take place on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at Javelina Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The NCAA Division II Football All-Star Game is comprised of the top 88 D-II seniors in the nation.
Shuford, a senior free safety from Newton, was named the 2010 South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player Of The Year, becoming the third player in school history to earn the honor.

Vergie Lee Withers Price, 83, of Lincolnton, passed away Dec. 13, 2010, at CMC – Lincoln. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at EF Drum Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Little and the Rev. Marty Caudle officiating.

Joann Kidder Owens, 44, of Hickor,y went to be with her maker and to meet her son Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, in the Chapel of Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton.
