Longtime Maiden golf pro C.B. Jones remembered

The Maiden and golf communities lost a dear friend last week.

Claybourne Brooks “C.B.” Jones, Jr. died this past Thursday at the age of 62 after a longtime battle with colon cancer.

A longtime golf pro at Glen Oaks Golf Club, Jones was laid to rest on Monday at Maiden City Cemetery.

Pin Station in the Spotlight

Pin Station was lit up with the familiar faces of children and their families for an afternoon of bowling, billiards and gaming on Sunday. The facility was also lit up for a less familiar reason — “Get Well” the movie was shooting on location at the Newton business.

NC Child Health Report Card

The 2015 Child Health Summit was held yesterday in Raleigh to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the North Carolina Child Health Report Card and 20 years of progress in children's health.

The report card looked at statistics like youth smoking rates, infant death rates, insured children rates, teen pregnancy rates, childhood obesity and child poverty.

Dale Jarrett, Gary Yount join N-CHS Hall of Fame

Newton-Conover High School inducted its sixth-ever athletic hall of fame class on Monday night.

Former Red Devils Dale Jarrett and Gary Yount joined the long list of hall of famers during the school’s winter sports banquet held at Lemon Gymnasium.

Cartoons come to life

Students at North Newton Elementary School don their favorite cartoon character’s costumes on Friday as they march around the gym for a parade. Students spent the week learning about books and the importance of reading to celebrate the birthday of children’s book author Dr. Seuss.

Explosion proves fatal for one victim

A man has died as a result of injuries sustained during an explosion that occurred at 3954 N.C. Highway 16 North on Monday afternoon.

At approximately 2:13 p.m. Monday, the Conover Fire Department responded to a reported explosion and structure fire.

Neighbors told the O-N-E that they heard a “loud boom” followed by the smell of smoke.

Trojans can’t come back, fall in West finals to Eagles

Bandys had made a habit of overcoming double-digit deficits during its run in the 2A girls basketball playoffs.

Saturday’s deficit, though, was one it just couldn’t overcome.

The Trojans fell behind by 12 points early and couldn’t click on offense against Wilkes Central, falling 49-40 to the Eagles in the 2A West finals at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex.

Allie Smith is a steady influence for the Lady Trojans

Through 26 wins, a conference championship and a 2A West Region appearance, there has been a constant for the Bandys girls basketball team this season — point guard Allie Smith.

The senior captain takes the floor Saturday, leading the Lady Trojans (26-1) against Wilkes Central (24-4) for a right to reach their second-straight state title game.
