The last Monday in May is known to many as the start of the summer with cookouts and lake trips. This Memorial Day, while enjoying grilled foods, also take time to venture out and remember the sacrifices made for freedom.
Frances Link Kincaid, 82, of Conover, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013 at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville. The Kincaid family is in the care of Robert F. Bennett, Funeral Service Licensee.
The Conover City Council approved the 2013-14 fiscal budget Monday night after a public hearing.
One Conover resident, Candy Hess, spoke during the hearing and asked the city council members to place themselves in the shoes of the general public when they vote on the budget.
An alert Catawba County EMS crew noticed a house on fire at 4865 N.C. 10 east, shortly after 6 a.m., Tuesday morning, and called for assistance.
Fire crews from Catawba, Bandys, Claremont, Oxford and Newton battled the blaze for 45 minutes before bringing it under control.
The story and a half residence was fully involved when the first fire apparatus arrived.
Six Hickory Crawdads were chosen to represent the Northern Division in the 54th Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game.
The league announced its All-Star selections in a press release on Tuesday.
The game will be played June 18 at the home of the Lakewood BlueClaws — FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, N.J.
Tuesday night's American Legion Baseball game featuring Hickory Post 48 at Wilkes County was postponed due to weather conditions.
Hickory coach Fore Rembert said both teams will attempt to make up the game, but a date and time have yet to be determined.

Garrett Lowery nearly had the game of his life on Monday — all at Hickory’s expense.
The Gastonia shortstop was a double short of hitting for the cycle, helping hand Post 48 its second-straight loss on Monday night at Henkel-Alley Field.
Hickory, which fell 10-8 on Friday to Burke County, drops to 3-2 overall on the season.
Cletus Wesley Drum, 88 of Newton, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Abernethy Laurels. The Drum family is in the care of Robert F. Bennett, Funeral Service Licensee.
The Hickory Tavern Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution recently awarded the Gwendolyn Bost Sherrill Scholarship to Morgan Huffman, salutorian at Maiden High School.
