Red Devils are No. 7 heading into key game Friday

The Newton-Conover football team remained in seventh place in the latest Associated Press prep football poll for North Carolina, which was released on Tuesday.

The Red Devils (6-0-1) received a total of 74 votes, which was more votes than they’ve received in the past two weeks (62 and 60, respectively). N-CHS once again received one first-place vote in the poll.

John Benjamin Wofford, MD., age 85, of Conover, NC, went to his Heavenly Home on Saturday, October 11, 2014. Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Conover, NC is honored to serve the Wofford family.

Kevin Kerry Kaminsky, age 61, of Hickory passed away Sunday, October 12, 2014 at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Kaminsky family.

Grant Awarded to County Fire Depts.

Congressman Patrick McHenry made a stop in Newton Monday afternoon to drop off a check — the largest he’s awarded in his 10 years in Congress.

“This is a major thing,” McHenry said while presenting the check at the 1924 Courthouse in Newton. “It’s the largest Fire Assistance Grant I’ve ever awarded.”

Walker wins Classic; N-CHS is first to repeat

Newton-Conover High School had never won the Greater Hickory High School Classic until Alex Hefner captured the crown last year.

After Monday, the Red Devils can now say they are the first area high school to win the event two years in a row.
