Kidnapping suspect caught

Sheriff's deputies now have an alleged kidnapper in custody after a 4-hour search.

Jamey Lineberger, 33, took a woman, who he was in a former relationship with, from her home near Bethany Church Road and forced her into a van. Lineberger then led Catawba County sheriff's deputies on a high-speed chase for about 15 miles into Lincoln County near Goodson Road.

Sheriff Coy Reid said Lineberger drove his van through a field and hit a fence, wrecking his van. Lineberger then escaped the vehicle on foot. Reid said K-9 units tracked Lineberger to N.C. 150 east, where they lost his scent.

Deputies search for alleged kidnapper

Catawba County and Lincoln County sheriff's deputies are attempting to locate a male involved in a morning kidnapping, which started in Claremont.

Jamey Lineberger, 33, took a woman, who he was in a former relationship with, from her home near Bethany Church Road and forced her into a van. Lineberger then led Catawba County sheriff's deputies on a high-speed chase for about 15 miles into Lincoln County near Goodson Road.

I-40 shut down after truck explodes

June 8, 2011

A westbound lane of Interstate 40 between Claremont and Conover is shut down after a truck exploded Wednesday morning.

A truck ran off the road and into the median causing the truck to explode after a fuel leak. A westbound lane near exit 135 through exit 138 are closed, and traffic is moving slow. Travelers are encouraged to use alternate routes.

No injuries reported. The truck was carrying various mechanical parts.

Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident and is directing traffic on the scene.

High school students share Shootout experience

Celebrities, golf professionals and some of the area’s best high school golfers stole the show Tuesday as part of the Dale Jarrett Shootout at the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn presented by Kia Motors.

Among those in attendance were NASCAR owner Joe Gibbs, NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin, former Virginia Tech and Charlotte Hornets star Dell Curry and Olympic gold medalist Dan Jansen.

Each of the celebrities that played in Tuesday’s event were paired with a golf professional and one of the top-five finishers in Monday’s Greater Hickory High School Classic.

Newton approves $40M budget

Newton City Council approved a $40 million budget that will hold steady citizens' taxes, as well as water and sewer rates, while delivering a pay raise for all city employees and investing in the city's capital needs during the year ahead. 
Those needs will be addressed in $8 million in spending included in a capital improvements plan (CIP) the first year of which is funded in the 2011-12 budget.

Fans give tips for GHC fun

Finally, the Greater Hickory Classic is here.
After months of “swing into summer” commercials and promotional electronic billboards, the much anticipated PGA Champions Tour event arrived in Catawba County.     
But before hitting the links to catch your favorite player, it might be a good idea to scout out the most optimal way to enjoy the week’s festivities.
Die-hard Classic fans were already out in force Tuesday to watch the Dale Jarrett shootout and had their own ideas of what the “best” way to enjoy the tournament truly is.

Samuel Anthony Irby, 94, of Newton, passed away May 15, 2011, at Abernethy Laurels in Newton.  The Irby family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Willis Reynolds Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton.

Dorothy Gray Hall Miller, 80, of Hickory, died Monday, June 6, 2011, at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley.  The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at Drum Funeral Home in Hickory and 30 minutes prior to the service Thursday at the church.

Last week launches

As students countywide launched their last week of school, science lessons took flight at Tuttle Elementary School.

When students arrived at Tuttle on Monday, they found an eight-story, red, white and blue science class inflating on the field adjacent to the school. Thanks to Remax Crossroads in Lincolnton and Remax Carolina Hot Air Balloon Team, students at the school were able to get a first-hand demonstration behind the science of giant balloons they may have only seen from afar.

Granite Falls man dies at Hickory facility

A man died Tuesday morning after he was trapped between a tractor-trailer and a loading dock at Institutional Food House in Hickory.

Jerry Whitman, 49, of Granite Falls, was crushed between a tractor-trailer and a loading dock at Institutional Food House, located at 543 12th St. Drive NW, according to Hickory Police Maj. Clyde Deal. Whitman, an IFH employee, was working at the facility at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday when the incident occurred. He was pronounced dead on the scene from injuries resulting from the accident's impact.
