Strunk joins NCHSAA Hall on Saturday

A Newton native and former Observer News Enterprise employee takes his place among the state's best on Saturday.

Rick Strunk is one of eight members of this year's North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Hall of Fame class, which will be officially inducted at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Friday Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

R U OK Program saving lives in Maiden

When Evelyn Lowman, 87, didn’t answer her daily “R U OK” phone call from the Maiden Police Department on March 26, Lt. Donna Hartman began to worry.

“I went out to check on her and couldn’t get her to the door,” Hartman said. “That’s always a little bit scary.”

Armed robbery at Dollar General

April 13, 2015

At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, Catawba County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an armed robber at the Dollar General located at the intersection of Highway 16 Business and Highway 150 near Denver.

A black male wearing a blue ski mask entered the store with a gun and demanded money from the clerk, according to Sheriff Coy Reid.

One dead after head-on collision

One person was confirmed dead after a head-on collision Friday afternoon.

At approximately 1:14 p.m on Friday, officials responded to an accident on Kool Park Road near St. Stephens High School in Hickory.

Crawdads three-hit Hagerstown in their opener

Giving up just two runs and three hits, the Hickory Crawdads earned a 5-2 win in their season opener Thursday at L.P. Frans Stadium against the Hagerstown Suns.

'Dads starter Ariel Jurado and relievers Adam Parks and John Fasola combined for the three-hitter, striking out 15 Suns batters during the contest.

The Office of Safety and Security at Lenoir-Rhyne University have issued an alert to all students, faculty, staff and other members of the campus community to be aware of an alleged incident that occurred on Tuesday, April 7, 2015.
