Lady Blue Devils win first tourney title since ‘04

Behind the play of senior Jessica Cooper and freshman Sammie West, the Maiden softball team claimed its first conference tournament title since 2004 on Tuesday.

Catawba County Board of Commissioners Chair Katherine W. Barnes declared a State of Emergency for Catawba County late of Monday, May 6, in response to serious flooding in several areas of the county.

Pillars plaque to be dedicated

John Kasay officially retires as a Carolina Panther

The last original Carolina Panther has decided to hang up his cleats for the last time.

Former kicker John Kasay signed a one-day contract to retire with Carolina on Tuesday.

The Panthers held a special retirement reception on Tuesday for Kasay.

SCHEDULE CHANGES: CVAC baseball final moved

Tonight's Catawba Valley 2A baseball championship game between Bandys and Draughn has been moved.

The contest, originally scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds, was moved to Maiden High School at 7 p.m. tonight.

The CVAC softball championship between Maiden and Draughn will still be played at Maiden High School tonight at 6 p.m.

Bandys' Jackson Gilliam signs with Catawba College

Jackson Gilliam nearly lost his life in October of 2011.

Two years later, the Bandys senior baseball player is going to have the time of his life playing college baseball.

Ashley Moore Hart, 42, of Hickory, went home to be with her Lord, Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice.  The Hart family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Cremations in Newton.

Teacher arrested for peeping

A Hickory teacher made his first appearance in court at the Catawba County Justice Center on Monday for two counts of Felony Secret Peeping.

Scott William Grantham, 50, of 1371 5th St. NE in Hickory was arrested on Friday, May 3 at Arndt Middle School for the two felony charges. Grantham was an English as Second Language  teacher at the school.
