Eathel White Howard, 89, of Terrell, was surrounded by her family as she peacefully went to her heavenly home on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Sherrills Ford, NC. Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton, NC, is honored to serve the Howard family.

Collision in Conover

January 13, 2015

An accident on Hwy. 70 near McDonald’s in Conover redirected traffic for about a mile in the eastbound lane. The traffic was held up for about 30 minutes. Conover Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene where a person was initially reported as trapped in the vehicle. No further information was available as of press time.

Officials sign agreement to protect local children

Representatives of Catawba County law enforcement, the District Attorney's Office, Catawba County Social Services, and the Children's Advocacy and Protection Center of Catawba County have signed an inter-agency agreement pledging to work together to protect the child victims of sexual and serious physical abuse.

Claremont man convicted of three felonies

Tony Ray Shatley, 39, of Claremont, N.C., pleaded guilty to three felonies and a driving while impaired charge during Catawba County Superior Court on Friday, Jan. 9.

French Connection

“The hardest part has been the last two weeks,” said Marie Messeant, a foreign exchange student at Newton-Conover High School. “ I had tried to only talk to my parents once a week, but with everything that is going on in France I have talked to my family every day this week.”

Messeant is visiting from Chatel-Guyon, France — a city about four hours south of Paris.

Sex Crime Conviction

January 12, 2015

Edmundo Bello-Gomez, 50, of Conover, N.C., pleaded guilty as charged to three counts of indecent liberties with a child and one count of attempted first-degree rape in Catawba County Superior Court on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015. The offenses involved a 10-year-old female child and occurred between April 2009 and May 2010. There was no plea bargain.

Abernethy cleared of charges

In March of 2014, Newton Councilman Robert Abernethy, Jr. was arrested and charged with resisting a public officer, failure to obey a traffic officer and reckless driving by Greensboro Police.

On his way home from a basketball game, Abernethy said he attempted to continue straight down a road where an unidentified person was directing traffic to turn left.
