Newton native Pauletta Pearson Washington and her husband, Denzel Washington, were honored in New York City for their acting careers and community outreach.
The Princess Grace Foundation-USA held the 28th annual Princess Grace Awards Gala on Nov. 10 in New York City. The awards ceremony included the presentation of 21 awards to emerging artists in theater, dance and film, as well as the Prince Rainier III Award to be presented to Denzel and Pauletta Washington.
Brian Barnett's first week on the job included a lot of meetings and a lot of learning, but he's ready to hit the ground running.
Barnett started Nov. 1 as Catawba's town manager, and he is the third person in six months to hold the position. The town's previous manager, Jonathan Kanipe, left his position July 1 to take a job as Columbus town manager. Eric Davis was then hired as an interim town manager while council members searched for a replacement for Kanipe.
The death Nov. 6 of historian and author Anne Williams McAllister, of Hickory, ended a career of chronicling the rich history of her local ancestors and the diverse roles they played in the 18th and 19th centuries in forming present-day Catawba County.
Evidence recovered during a Caldwell County search could provide police with the information they need to crack a month-old murder investigation.
Hickory Police confirmed Thursday they located potentially valuable evidence Wednesday in the Zahra Baker case during their search of a wooded area near Upper Little River in Caldwell County.
Police, however, remain tight-lipped about what that evidence is.
Volunteers honored Thursday with Giving from the Heart awards were offered congratulations, but more importantly, the winners were offered words of thanks.
The Catawba County Volunteer Center held a reception Thursday at the Catawba Country Club honoring selfless volunteers from across the county.

Robert “Bob” Glenn McLean II, 50, of Newton, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
Mary Lou Gilmore, 79, of Hickory, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, at Frye Regional Medical Center. A private burial will take place at a later time.
Paul Lewis Graham, 90, of Hickory, passed away Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at Pinecrest in Hickory. Bass-Smith Funeral Home is serving the family of Paul Lewis Graham.
Police found key evidence Wednesday in the Zahra Baker homicide investigation, but they won't confirm the nature of the evidence.
Hickory Police released a press release Thursday stating search teams in Caldwell County "located evidence that could provide valuable information in the Zahra Baker case." The evidence is being analyzed at the State Bureau of Investigation’s lab.
The Fred T. Foard Tigers' 2010 season ended Wednesday in the third round of the 3-A West playoffs. Gastonia Ashbrook tied Foard 1-1 in overtime, but it beat the Tigers 4-3 in penalty kicks to advance to the region semifinal.
Ashbrook plays at 7 p.m. Saturday at Hickory. The Red Tornadoes beat Asheville 1-0 on Wednesday to advance.
Foard ends the season 14-7-5 overall.

Search teams returned Wednesday to another area that was previously searched for signs of Zahra Baker.
Newton-Conover inducted three members into its athletic Hall of Fame less than a year ago, and now the school wants more. The high school is now accepting nominations for the Newton-Conover Hall of Fame’s 2011 class.
“We do this once a year, and we got it to where people can start nominating who they want,†said Shawn Sigmon, chairwoman of the Newton-Conover Hall of Fame. “The basic concept is recognizing those people who gave back to Newton-Conover through the athletic program. We’re hoping older people remember people in the ‘50s and ‘60s and will send in a form.â€
