Service to honor fallen N.C. Coast Guardsman

MOBILE, Ala. — U.S. Coast Guard officials say a memorial service is planned for Thursday to honor an N.C. guardsman and other crew members of a helicopter that crashed in Mobile Bay a week ago.

An MH-65C Dolphin helicopter crashed in the bay's shallow waters during a training mission Feb. 28.

Lt. Cmdr. Dale Taylor, of Snow Hill, was aboard the aircraft. His wife, Teresa, was a 1994 graduate of Bunker Hill High School and has family in Catawba County.

Hickory couple wins big in lottery

A Hickory couple plans to pay off a mortgage, buy two cars and take a trip to Las Vegas after winning a $1 million instant prize in an N.C. Education Lottery game.

Rick and Mary Hollar purchased their winning ticket at Smoker Friendly on 29th Avenue in Hickory.

“It hasn’t sunk in,” Mary said. “Until I see it in my account, and it will be like ‘Wow, it’s real.’ We are going to enjoy life and be debt-free.”

Police are looking for a driver who hit a 12-year-old Claremont girl and fled the Oxford School Road scene Sunday night.

The girl was seriously injured and airlifted to a Charlotte hospital, now the Claremont community is praying for her recovery and searching for a silver or champagne colored SUV.

Fire destroyed a rental home near the Blackburn Community on Monday and firefighters rescued tenants pet dog moments before the structure collapsed.

Foard shut out by Burns on soccer field

Off to a 3-0 start to the season, the Fred T. Foard girls soccer team ran into its first speed bump Monday.

The Lady Tigers (3-1) were held offensively against Burns, while the Lady Bulldogs piled on five goals to earn the 5-0 shutout.

“We’re glad we’re getting this game over and its not quite in conference play yet,” said Lady Tigers coach Stan Elliott. “We’re going to learn from this, move forward as a team and get better from here.”

Burns (2-0) scored in the 18th minute to take the early lead on a Whitney Wellman kick from an assist by Kayla Powell.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Hickory ends N-C's home streak

The Newton-Conover's long home winning streak on the tennis court came to an end Monday with a 6-3 loss to Hickory.

The Red Devils (1-2) had won 64 consecutive matches dating back to 2007 before the Red Tornadoes non-conference court victory.

Newton-Conover starts conference play Tuesday with a match against South Iredell hoping to keep another long streak going. The Red Devils have won 61-straight conference matches heading into their match against the Vikings.

No. 4 Tar Heels ready to prove themselves in ACCs

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina was a preseason No. 1 stocked with experience and potential NBA talent that cruised through the regular season showing only flashes of the dominant form everyone had expected.

The fourth-ranked Tar Heels have gotten everyone's attention again.

North Carolina clinched the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship by overwhelming Duke in its famously hostile arena. The question now is whether that weekend performance was just one game or the start of something more for the Tar Heels heading into this week's ACC tournament in Atlanta.

Driver flees after hitting 12-year-old

Police are looking for suspects involved in a hit-and-run accident on Sunday that left a 12-year-old Claremont girl seriously injured.  

The girl was airlifted from Catawba County to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte on Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle while walking alongside Oxford School Road.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene.

Troopers with the N.C. Highway Patrol say the girl was walking with a friend alongside Oxford School Road near Bunker Hill School Road about 7 p.m. Sunday when the driver of a silver or champagne-colored SUV struck her in the back.

Sandra Ann Webb Jones, 60, of Berry Cap Drive, Conover, died Saturday, March 3, 2012, at her residence.  The Jones family has entrusted arrangements to Jenkins Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Newton.

Nancy Yvonne Pope Lackey Teague, 74, of Conover, died Sunday, March 4, 2012, at her home after years of declining health. The Teague family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation in Conover.

Arrest order issued for Adam Baker

An order for Adam Baker's arrest was issued Monday in Lenoir District Court.

Baker, who voluntarily departed the United States for Australia in January, was scheduled to appear in Caldwell County court Monday on a misdemeanor charge of failure to return rental property.

The arrest order came on a charge of failure to appear, and a secured bond of $2,000 was issued.

On Jan. 19, Baker left the United States on a flight bound for Australia with the remains of his 10-year-old daughter Zahra. A deportation order by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement already had been issued.

Mayfield sidekick charged

A Hickory man seen with Jeremy Mayfield last year at the site of reported trailer thefts surrendered Monday after being indicted on four counts of felony larceny.

Rusty Alex Canipe, of 232-C 14th Ave. Drive SW, Hickory, turned himself in to the Caldwell County Magistrate’s Office. He was issued a $100,000 unsecured bond.

The charges are a result of a year-long investigation into the larceny of trailers and furniture that were stolen Feb. 26, 2011, from the former Anderson Truck Lines, located at 2698 Hickory Blvd. in Hudson.
