At age 41, Derek Correll is riding the biggest waves in his life.
Correll, a Sherrills Ford native, has been involved in the sport of watercross since 1987.
He initially became active in the sport by spending time with friends who were interested in jet skis as well.
"I started working on jet skis," Correll said. "I met up with some guys who were doing the same thing I was doing at the time. They also did their own maintenance work. I got involved with them a little bit and started learning things from them."
An apparent grease fire destroyed a Conover mobile home Tuesday, displacing a family of three and leaving them with nothing.
Firefighters responded to a reported structure fire at Lyle Haven Mobile Home Park off County Home Road in Conover. The blaze was reported shortly before 3:30 p.m.
Conover Fire Department arrived on the scene with three engines and a ladder truck to find a fully involved fire at trailer lot F3.

Catawba Valley Community College christened its new student center Tuesday with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony, as students, faculty and members of the community watched.

Brenda Gail Williams Lail, 57, of Conover, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley. A celebration of life and worship service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at Tri City Baptist Church.
Jeffery Lee “Yogi” Alexander, 53, of Hickory, passed away Feb. 14, 2011, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. The Alexander family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Hickory.
Portions of U.S. 321 between Newton and Maiden were closed Tuesday after a tractor trailer overturned.
The crash happened shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday when a tractor trailer flipped over at the intersection of U.S. 321 Business and Elliott Lane, just outside of Newton city limits.
Several powerlines were downed from the crash. The live wires stretched across the road as emergency responders worked on the scene.
The driver of the truck was transported by ambulance to Catawba Valley Medical Center.
A 19-year-old who shot and mutilated his roommate confessed his actions to 9-1-1 dispatchers, even detailing the circumstances that brought him into the Mountain View home of the victim.
“Um, I took some pills and then some more pills and I murdered my roommate,” Michael Anderson told a 9-1-1 dispatcher with Catawba County Communications. “I shot him three times and then used an axe and mutilated his body.”
Anderson has been charged with murder in the Monday morning death of Stephens Starr, 36, in the Mountain View area. Anderson called 9-1-1 about 4:54 a.m. Monday.
A Kings Mountain man is charged with murder after he allegedly shot, stabbed and mutilated his roommate before calling police and alerting them to the crime.
Michael Joseph Anderson, 19, called police at 4:47 a.m. Monday and reported he shot his roommate, Stephen Eric Starr, 36. Investigators determined majority of Starr’s wounds happened after he was dead.
Deputies arrived 8 minutes after the call at 5209 Ruth Drive. They found Starr shot, stabbed and struck with a log-splitting, axe-like tool in the master bedroom of his residence.

The city of Hickory is joining forces with area service clubs to create a playground suitable for children with disabilities in honor of a deceased Hickory girl who used a prosthetic leg and hearing aids.
