Bobby Ray Burgin, 54, of Maiden, died Sunday, April 15, 2012, due to a motorcycle accident.  Burke Mortuary in Maiden is serving the Burgin Family.

Early voting begins Thursday

Early voters may see longer lines at the polls this year because of cuts in state funding, election officials say.

Catawba County voters will be limited to one early voting site in Newton this year, compared to multiple locations in past years.

Zahra playground nearly ready

More than 350 volunteers completed the construction of equipment at the Zahra Baker All Children's Playground in Hickory this past weekend.

Rabies case reported in Newton

Catawba County recorded its fourth rabies case of 2012 last week after two dogs got into a fight with a raccoon that tested positive for the disease.
On Thursday, animal control officers responded to a call that two dogs were observed fighting with the raccoon.

Collision delays I-40 morning traffic

April 16, 2012

N.C. Highway Patrol officials say a Monday morning I-40 crash served as a reminder that Catawba County drivers should pay close attention when traveling on the interstate.

One lane of I-40 traffic was blocked for about a half hour early Monday after two vehicles collided near exit 130 in Conover.

'Dads drop rubber match to Asheville, 9-6

April 15, 2012

First baseman Harold Riggins drove in three RBIs on a 4-for-5 day to lift the visiting Asheville Tourists to a 9-6 win, taking two-of-three games against the Hickory Crawdads.

Rougned Odor led Hickory offensively, going 2-for-5 from the plate with three RBIs — two of which came on a home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Red Devils seek input on football coach

April 15, 2012

Newton-Conover High School will host a meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in its media center to gather input on the qualities the community would like to see the school's next football coach possess.

The school encourages those who can't attend the meeting to send their input to new school athletic director and assistant principal Billy Leeson at billy_leeson@nccs.k12.nc.us.
