Virginia H. Ham, 85, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Conover Nursing & Rehab. The Ham family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover, NC

Joyce Ann Whitener Carpenter, age 78, of Charlotte passed away Monday, January 12, 2015 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Carpenter family.

Jered Sturgill and Melvin Whistlehunt had a dream that day by day they are making into a reality. Their dream started this past summer as they were sitting around talking at a family barbeque.

Home near Claremont ruled total loss after fire

January 14, 2015

A home on Stewart Rd. near Claremont burned to the ground on Sunday night.

“When we got there the whole attic and the roof was on fire,” said Oxford Fire Department Chief Wayne Smith.

The home was a mobile home that had been built onto, Smith said.

Library PIO to retire

Tammy Wilson, 60, “thought it would be fun” to work with the Catawba County Library System.

Originally volunteering for the library, she began working part time as the Public Information Officer in March of 2006 and is now retiring.

Newton gets ready for some rehab

The Downtown Streetscape Master Plan Review Committee and the City of Newton have partnered with Allison Platt & Associates and The Wooten Company to revamp and revitalize the heart of Newton.

BREAKING: School systems announce delays

Catawba County, Newton-Conover City and Hickory Public Schools are all operating on a two-hour delay on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015.

All three schools issued statements Tuesday afternoon regarding the delays in normal schedule.

BREAKING: Athletic events postponed, moved up

Due to impending weather, several athletic events on Tuesday in Catawba County have been postponed or moved up in time.
