Summer is here and it is time for the Fourth of July holiday. For many people, this holiday means food, fun, and fireworks. Yes, fireworks can be fun; but they also can be very dangerous. To keep this holiday from turning into a tragedy, the Hickory Fire Department offers these safety precautions.

Newton homicide investigation continues

The investigation continues into the murder of Newton-Conover City Schools teacher Margaret “Maggie” Daniels.

Newton Police Chief Don Brown said Tuesday evening that a roundtable discussion involving police, investigators, and the District Attorney had occurred to talk about the incident.

Post 170 grabs early lead, goes ahead 1-0 in series

Alexander County scored five early runs and held off a late charge from Hickory, winning the first Area IV playoff game between the two teams Tuesday, 5-3.

Game two of the series takes places tonight at Henkel-Alley Field at the American Legion Fairgrounds. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Mark David Wireman, age 52, of Newton passed away Saturday, June 28, 2014 at his residence. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Wireman family.

Roger Dale Brown, 64 of Claremont died Friday June 27, 2014 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem. The Brown family is in the care of Bennett Funeral Service, 828-465-2111

Largest county fire and rescue grant awarded

Congressman Patrick McHenry (R-NC-10) has announced $1,777,320 in a U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) grant to local fire departments in the Tenth Congressional District.

BREAKING: Women's death investigated as homicide

June 30, 2014

The death of a woman in Newton on Saturday morning is being investigated as a homicide, according to the Newton Police Department.

Maggie Daniels, 31, was found dead in her apartment at W. 17th Street in Newton at 10:37 a.m. on Saturday.

After a preliminary autopsy, a medical examiner suspects "foul play" is involved.
